There is a point in the game, when weaker AIs don't have gold for things like research agreement. On the other hand, they are best candidates for such deal. They have slow tech rate, so they aren't threat. In fact it would even be helpful to "uplift" some such civ, so they could stand better against other AI aggressor.

So, what to do?
Gift that civ all gold needed to start research agreement.

Sure, it's more expensive this way. But benefits may be better then disadvantages.

Any thoughts?

See if you can give them a "loan": gold per turn in exchange for a lump sum. A lot of the time I notice even if they have low cash reserves they have enough GPT to pay you back over 30 turns or whatever.

I sometimes gift, 250 for a tech isn't a bad deal. But typically difficulties I play at it's AI who's richer not me.

I'm using the same thing, and I consider it cheating :p
AI has 140 gold, I've got thousands thanks to making no units. I want to tech up, so I'll just give the AI missing 210 gold and then immediatly get a research agreement with them. I get a good tech, while they get something that doesn't really help them, at least not as much as the agreement helped me.
700 gold for a tech isn't bad at all, when making 250ish per turn(more during golden age)

Have agreements with all other civilizations, they all get one tech, you get like 10 techs in 1 turn! You'll get ahead of them, AND minor relations boost.

And I suggest, if you are at war with a weak civ, before sacking their last city make peace with them, get a research agreement, and after 10 turns (when the forced peace wears off) declare war on them, to get the tech and THEN capture their last city.

So they get a new tech for 40 gold. ;-) Getting you to sponsor their progress is kind of helpful.

I've done that too when I was very rich before xD

Gaining 10 techs after 30 turns can be very powerful cuz it'll pull you basically ahead by a era quick. Provided that you have enough gold that is.

Could be fun to borrow cash for gold per turn from AIs and re-invest into research deals financing your advancement with their money.

With all said, research agreements are one of the cheapest way to get more technology.

2000 science worth tech for 300gold?
Hard to say no for that... Even if it was 600gold. That's why paying for AI part makes sense.
