I've read a few threads about giving the AI a combat bonus to compensate for it's dis-advantage against human players and the following idea occurred to me:
Recently I noticed that a great general's range (which is 2 hexes by default) is changeable in the Global Defines XML file. If it was set to a very high number (like 20 or 30), then the AI would always have a 20% bonus to combat if it had a great general anywhere.
and if the player would only use great generals to start golden ages or build ciditels, then the AI would always have a 20% combat bonus against the player.
Lately, I've been thinking that my use of general's was pretty "gamey" anyway. I'd move my general around during different stages of an attack so that my general would give his bonus to all my units whenever they'd attack. In addition to this, the AI isn't very good at using it's generals properly to receive the 20% bonus.
So often I'd have a 20% bonus against the AI because of it's poor use of generals, or I'd at least have evened out general bonuses when the AI's general was in range. If the AI had had a 20% bonus over me in all those battles, things would have been much more challenging for sure.
Perhaps the best way is to restrict the player from using his general in combat, without giving the AI generals unlimited range.
What do you think? Thanks in advance.
