My apologies if this has been discussed before. Ok, so I am not exactly new to this game; I've actually had it for a couple years. However, until recently, I hadn't really gotten that into it and only played on regent. I am now able to tear it up on monarch, mainly because of what I have read in the warroom and forums.

I recently encountered a situation I hadn't really thought about before, so I thought I would bring it up here. I am playing a small map on monarch, and the egyptians were, up until very recently, the runaway superpower on the map. Because of some mutual protection pacts, all but one of the races declared war on Egypt in the matter of about a turn. Some countries have since declared peace, so it now only me (the chinese) and the greeks fighting the egyptians. The greeks lack saltpeter to make cavalry. I have two extra saltpeters, but the greeks don't have anything to offer for it. Since no one else is in need of that particular resource, I decided to give saltpeter to the greeks for 4 gold and their world map. Is this generally a good idea? The greeks and egyptians may sign a peace treaty soon, so I may be taking a bit of a chance. But I figured it wouldn't really hurt to give them the resource. Plus they are now gracious towards me.

Does anyone else give things away at strategic moments? And if so, when?

Yes i do... why not really?
If they're really getting pounded you could also give them a bundle of cash so that they can rush more units.
And if the MPP is still on, try putting at couple of undefended workers just whithin your borders for the egyptians to take... that way the rest of the civ's will jump back into the fight. Then you can give them what they need to keep up aswell.

It's ok, but tie it to the war, so if they make peace they lose the saltpeter.

That's right, if you make it part of a military alliance deal, then if they suddenly make peace with the Egyptians they'll lose the Saltpeter.

hmm. I didn't really think about tying it into a military alliance deal. Thanks for the info guys!

another thing to take into consideration is their proximity to you, if after the war with the chinese they have a bunch of extra cavalry lying around, are you their next target?
