Giving up on Multiplayer

Well, that's it. I give up. Up to patch 1.21 and I still can not play online with this thing. I can play tons of others online so I can't blame my crappy connection or my stupid SiS chipset. No I must steal someone else's signature. I am Midas in reverse, evrything I touch turns to sh!t.

I love all the single player stuff from PTW that they managed to fit in just one game of Civ II. It's really fun but they advertised it as multiplayer and for me at least it isn't. I guess I'll just go back to Civ II - at least it lived up to its expectation.

If you'd like to wallow in a pit of utter despair and self pity, and suffer the same problem of no mutliplayer PTW; then add on to my thread

you mean multiplayer is too laggy or you can't join games? Because if you can't join games, thats probably a firewall issue.

i gave up on multiplayer, and here's why...

1. getting into a game is a game in itself.
2. once your in a game, the time you set aside to play has already passed.
3. eight people will try to get in, five will make it, two will leave within the first few techs, and with only three players it's no fun anymore.
4. it makes you feel like you wasted your money, and makes you forget the single player additions were worth every cent.

Sween32, the solution to your problem is to find some good players.

Yes, exactly. You need to find people that are reliable, and that you can contact outside of the game, if problems need to be sorted out. Playing against people you meet in chat isn't too reliable most of the time, although I have found several nice people...

Err, anyway, multiplayer really isn't THAT bad... it definately has room for improvement (lots of room) but it is playable, and alot of fun once you get a game going :).

Finding reliable people isn't too hard.

Tips:

If they can't spell, don't play them.
If they don't chat much in a game, don't play with them.
If they have technical problems or v.high ping don't play with them.
If they don't swap you working e-mail addresses don't play them.

Ideally opponents should be on MSN messenger and so you can keep in touch should a game go down or to carry on the game. You should ideally be playing people who don't have technical issues like the dude here who started this thread and you should avoid most 56kers and a$$holes ;)

A pretty comprehensive list.

Let me clear things up. I'm not behind a firewall. My virus scanner is off. My crashproof is off. Nothing runs in the backround but PTW. 1000 MHz PIII, gobs of RAM

I CAN NOT play on the internet. I'm not the kind to go hump my computer to a lan party. Hotseat seems futile.

Now I'll hand it to firaxis. With every patch I've gotten further into a game. But with 1.21f once the game starts, I am unable to move any units, or build with the settler. In fact my presense causes the same to happen to others with whom the patch has worked.

The frustrating thing is that the closest thing to a problem I've had with any other multiplayer is occassionally I have to wait for the first patch because the SiS chipset isn't supported. This is the 4th version, I doubt that's the problem.
:(

What operating system you using dude?

It SHOULD be compadible, but ME just sucks. it's the worst version ever made, and it screws up everything you put on it.

I've played multiplayer games a couple of times. I played these games all in the first week or so of PTW purchase.
I'd question the chat point because I found it quite difficult to use the in game chat for two reasons:
1. Time limitations - I mean I'm a pretty fast typer but sheesh.
2. Text cropping - If you type something that's more than a few words it just gets cropped off.
I saw someone mentioning using some kind of IM program to chat whilst playing but then you're alt-tabbing all the time.
Just my 2p.

I love how when someone says PTW sucks, ppl instantly start saying its your firewall or your OS or you dont play ppl who can play the game.

Could it be that CIV3 and PTW were never meant to be played by more than one person? And that the multiplayer functions err multiplayer options just don't work. Those that do are VERY VERY poor.

I love the community here but the blind loyalty makes me wanna puke.

SewerStarFish I'm with ya, haven't played in months and I'm not missing anything.
my 2 cents

Text cropping is fixed in 1.21 (and has been for months for Kitten).

Ah, thanks Warpstorm. I'll go do the download thing.
Just so everything's clear though I'm not a kitten, I doubt I'd be able to type at all if I was - I'd probably give it a go though.

... Or at least I would if the 1.21 patch was available for the UK version of PTW.
I understand the marketing aspects of different releases for different regions but it would be nice if the patches were kept up to date on all versions.

I think he was talking to kittenOFchaos.
