Would you like to have the globe view again in VII?

I don't understand why V and VI didn't have it. Is there any kind of technical obstacle to implement it?

Please, Firaxis, bring it back. It adds a lot to the game fun, beauty and immersion. And I believe I'm not the only one that thinks this way.

What are your thoughts?

It was kind of neat in Civ4, but it's not really what I'd want the devs to be investing their resources on, either.

I don’t think it adds anything to the game.

Assuming that adding this to the game would take away from other resources to add onto the actual gameplay, I’m against adding it.

It's aesthetically beautiful at least, especially for this kind of game. Only Firaxis know if adding it would consume significant resources to the point of impacting gameplay development.

it wouldn't requires much, it's a visual effect, not a real spherical map.

I don't have any professional game development experience, so I always think it's presumptuous to assign a level of effort or difficulty to implementing something in a game. That that are seemingly simple and low effort can prove to be quite challenging depending on many factors unknown to those of us on the outside looking in.

Hence, I lead with the word “assuming” there.

I do recognize that a lot of people find the globe view enjoyable, though, and I certainly don’t begrudge that. Just speaking for my personal preference. If it ends up in the game I’ll be happy for those who like it.

Definitely; I was speaking hypothetically. I’m all for aesthetic things being added to the game that different people enjoy.

yes assuming, of course, I would bet it to be low resource cost, but maybe it's not as easy as I think.

Or it's also possible from Firaxis knowledge that more people like a "map view" over a "globe view".

If I understood it correctly, the way Civ IV was done made it "easy" to do, as the game became a 2D texture when you zoomed out enough, so applying it to the sphere was just an extra step. Making that 2D texture step is the part that can be complicated (taking snapshots of the tiles, etc). Curving the 3D map into sphere can be messy and a lot of work, that's for sure.

You know what I would like to see? A rotational view that stays stationary without having to keep Alt pressed. Let me see the back of a wonder without being a hassle. 😮‍💨

I don't like the idea of adding globe view unless it it optional and requires very little dev effort.

Globe view on the screen always covers inherently less land than the flat map for obvious geometric reasons. What I find much more alluring is something Paradox games offer - the ability to zoom out 2d map to see the entire world at once. Now that actually serves some utilitarian purposes, instead of being flashy yet impractical attraction.

I also wanted to point put that enforcing globe view on all maps would immediately ruin all maps and map scripts which by their nature don't cover the entire planet - so no maps of Europe, no Middle Earth, no unusual map scripts etc ;)

That's not true, civ4 had a lot of map scripts, some regional, some quite unusual (and some not seen since)
