God Save The Queen

What is the record and how much longer does she have to go?

I think she has good reason to continue, the idea of Charles as King is not a pleasant one. They should skip old Charlie and put William on the throne.

Under no circumstances should they "skip" a monarch based on personal charm or otherwise. It's not a popularity contest; that's what makes it BETTER than having a president.

We have no way of knowing whether William or Charles would be the "better" monarch, whatever that might mean. And that's the beauty of the system; you just get the next in line. No wondering about how good they might be.

And many thought George VI might be a "poor" monarch, without his brother's flair for publicity. Yet he made a pretty d@mn fine King.

Its a monarch, nobody gets the luxury of voting for monarchs.

But if the Queen dies when Charles is 70ish, will he still take the job? Frogive the ignorance here.
would you pass up the opportunity to be king?

Yes, but the King title doesn't have the signifigance that it did even 200 years ago. There wouldn't be a whole lot of difference to Charles whether he was King or just a prominent part of the Royal Family as he is now. Will there? Plus he may get a kick out of seeing William on the throne during his lifetime.

Louis XIV born: september 5th 1638

reign started: march 10th 1661 (22 years old).

He died in 1715.

I don't this is a record...

Well im not sure if its the national anthem for the scots, but their rugby song is purely about beating the english in a battle ;p
@. The romans had the right idea with that wall!! ;-)

Its strange with the queen. I understand why people say the royal family shouldnt be around etc.

But, after watching the true horror that is war theres something strangely reassuring about seeing the queen visiting the towns of servicemen etc.

I thought the record was held by the Emperor Franz Joseph II from Austria-Hungary (1848-1916). Although one might argue that Louis XIV officially became king of France in 1643 at the age of 5 (wasn't it Mazarin who ruled as a regent until he came of age?).
