Gold Edition Modding Woes

Hi all, I just received Civ 4 Gold Edition as a thoughtful holiday gift and one of the reasons I had this game in mind was the vast array of mods available.

But lo! When I downloaded the Espana 1936 mod I found I was unable to play it. Upon loading a game it crashes to the desktop and asks me if I wanted to send an error report, which nobody ever does anyways.

I though that perhaps because the mod was designed for Warlords 2.08 I would need to download the old patch (as Gold Edition runs on 2.13) but I was greeted with an error message saying that I didn't have Warlords installed and so I couldn't download the patch, utter poppycock because I was playing it moments before.

So I'm asking now what it is I have to do to get this game to run mods properly. You all know how it is when you buy games these days, they hate to have to refund you because they assume you've just downloaded a crack.

Naturally, but when I scanned some previous topics it looked like Gold Edition, in general, seems to be trouble for all mods.

gold edition cannot be downgraded (or updated for this matter) using patches made for the retail versions - they would have to make custom ones for gold edition and while I would assume they'd make them for unlikely future patches there won't be older ones.

There's vanilla Civ4 (Globe background), Warlords (Warlord background), and Beyond the Sword (Vatican background). Are you using the last one to play the mod?

Oh, and the Bug Reports thread is for the normal game, not a mod.

Gold Editon only comes with the first expansion, Warlords, which is what the mod requires and what I try to run it on. Both the original Civ 4 and the Warlords expansion come fully patched in the Gold Edition, as well.

I have tried a few weird things like changing directory names and such but that does nothing. I also tried installing another mod, Second Revolutuon this time, and despite being able to see the title screen I have the same CtD problem as with Spain 1936.

And as I say, I get the distinct impression that Gold Edition has a severe problem with running any mods.

I have Gold Edition and I play a lot of mods.

I have Fall From Heaven 0.25 vanilla and 0.30 BTS, CivCraft, Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Barebones, several additional civilization and leader mods, Final Fantasy Tactics, EE3, Rhye's and Fall of Civilization ...

Well, I have a lot of mods and use them with Gold edition. The only thing I found tricky is that Gold edition installs files to a different directory than the original retail versions. Make sure you are installing the mods into the appropriate folder for Gold:

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold\[Mods or Warlords\Mods or Beyond the Sword\Mods]

I feel a bit more reassured if somebody can get mods to run- but the two I've tried so far aren't working. I installed both manually in the proper places and still no look.

A few questions- are those mods for Warlords or Vanilla? Also, do you have Beyond the Sword installed too?

Most of the mods I listed are for Warlords and Vanilla. I only recently got Beyond the Sword and they worked prior to its installation.

Let me try the Espana mod and make sure it works for me.

Yep, looks like there is a problem.

When I play the Espana scenario with the Espana mod loaded, I crash to desktop. When I try to Play Now with the Espana mod loaded, I crash to desktop.

At least I can play *some* of the mods, seeing as you and I are in the same boat. And I'll see if the Espana crew have any ideas on how to tweak the mod so it works. But- if you have Beyond the Sword working on your Gold Edition I'm wondering if you can run the BtS version of Espana. That would solve the problem more or less.

The Beyond the Sword version of Espana worked without crashing. I played for 15 minutes without a problem.

I know this is an old topic, but was anyone able to get any mods to work with CIV 4 Gold Edition? I have been trying for several months and I just can't seem to get any to work. The game loads the mods, but none of the game functionality works with the mod loaded.

It has nothing to do with the Gold edition but with the patch version. Make sure the mod you have is compatible with Warlords 2.13 otherwise you might run into problems. There really aren't that many out there anymore, most have updated to BtS.

I just downloaded a mod which is compatible with Warlords 2.13 and the same problems occur. There must be some other issues. Others have had this problem, so I am wondering if anyone has found a solution.
