Well...Bienvenue Damien (welcome)!

Many people arround here consider that ToT is a waste of money ( see here for instance )

Well, if you don't have Civ2 Gold, TOT is well worth the money. The only bad thing about TOT is that it can't play most Civ2 Gold scenarios.

Well I got my copy of ToT a little over a week ago. From the one short game I have played(about 20 turns) its fine. I didn't notice the darkness everyone talks about and it seemed just like the old Civ 2. But I did look at the advance chart and there are some definetly strange advances on there. If given the choice between the two I would go with MGE, its more familiar, has more scenarios, better options and such. If you don't get a choice then I think ToT was well worth the $11.99 I paid for it.

The thing is, whenever you pay money for something, you're casting a vote essentially.

You're saying the quality is fine, the price is fine, etc.
That's for everthing you spend your hard earned bucks on.

I bought TOT recently because I thought it was a cheap (£10) way of getting CIV2 and some add-ons. What's different between its version of the original game and CIV2?

I do like the other scenarios though - took a while to get into, but worth it. I haven't seen anyone else discussing them, so I take it I'm in a minority here?

I used to play Civ2 all the time and now have TOT. I think it has way better graphics than the original Civ2. I do not know what everyone is talking about regarding the darkness. The animated units look great in my opinion. The things that are missing were frills like the wonder movies and the annoying dumbass advisor movies. The added worlds aren't that great, but it still has the original. You will need a more powerful computer to run it than you would for the original, but most people have way more powerful computers now than they did back in 1996. As for scenarios, you can play anyone you want just as long as you use the CivConverter found here on the downloads page. I've tried it and it works fine.
