Gold per turn deals prevent war?

I have not thoroughly tested this so I can't be certain. In this particular game under Monarch difficulty in late middle ages, I have so far been able to stay out of war with some of the most aggressive civs (Germans, Zulus) by employing a diplomatic strategy, as I am only the 3rd most poweful right now. What I did was asked for small loans of gold from the aggresive powerful civs. For example, I would ask for 30 gold and in return I will give 3 gold per turn for the next 20 turns, or I would buy techs for gold per turn deals. It seems to be keeping them from declaring war on me so far as they want me to fulfill my agreement. So is this an effective strategy?

The most important thing is to keep their attitude cautious or better. If you can do this through gpt gifts, go ahead. But I have had them sneak attack me even when I am paying.

Nope doesn't always work, you can test this by moving all your units out of 'all' your cities and placing them non threatening position or very threatening positions and see how long it takes before they get antsy. And they don't honor ROP's either.

gpt deals help them have a better attitude towards you, which in effect helps decrease the 'chances' of them declaring war on you. But no, it's not a guarantee of no war, because it would be an exploit if it was. Same goes for ROP and MPP.

Well I know there is no single thing that can gurantee to prevent war but I was thinking that maybe this tactic maybe significantly reduce the chances. Thanks for the replies.

In my experience the best way to prevent war is to sign MPP with another Civ, preferrably one in the top 3.

Yeah TF, but doin that might cost a bundle. A civ that was polite with me asked for a MPP along with two luxuries 59 gpt and all my gold (around 9k). Sometimes, its easir to see what happens (of course it was a fun war for me!)

The downside to that is that you may get dragged into unwanted wars when your 'ally' decides to attack someone. And then, your new enemy drags someone into a war with you. And so on. ;)

However, if you sell a tech for lots of gpt and they can't pay any longer, they will declare war on you.

Because you are a deal-braker.....

No. Because it is the only way for the AI to break the deal it can't keep!!!

Is there a legal way that will work in any case to make the enemy declare war on you? I dont't want to be a deal breaker, but sometimes, I wanna go to war with annoying enemies...

You could try the following:
  • disconnect resources you trade to them; this breaks the deal sort of legal, but still annoys them
  • getting caught in planting a spy is also often effective
  • asking them to trade you one of their cities
Repeating this for a couple of turns, and you have a very high chance of war being declared to you.

You don't have to break any deals to simply declare war. Be sure any deals have expired, then cancel the Peace Treaty. There is no rep hit. Though your victim may not be too happy, everyone else will consider it a personal matter.

If you disconnect the resource, you will get a rep hit and it will be very difficult (impossible in most cases) to trade any of your resources later in the game (to any civ who has met your enemy or met someone else who has met your enemy- word of mouth spreads quickly among the AI). Earlier versions of the game allowed you to do this without the huge rep hit, but this doesn't work in the latest versions (you'll still break the deal, but you get the huge rep hit).

You can use a combo of the other things tao mentioned. Keep demanding a city until the civ becomes 'furious', then fail at planting a spy or fail at any spy mission. If the civ is furious they are more likely to declare war then a civ who was on better terms with you. Trying to 'expose enemy mole' is a good one for this, especially if they don't have a spy (so it will always fail). If the furious civ has any units in your territory, you can demand he leaves your territory, and he may declare war. It's better if you can trick the AI into declaring war on you, so he'll be the treaty breaker/warmonger.

But the best way is to do what Zachriel said. If you don't have any treaties with that civ, and you have NO units in their territory. Contact them, then go to 'active' deals and click on peace treaty. Then click on 'never mind'. This will declare war with no real rep hit.

In my experience, gpt deals usually do deter war -- unless the AI has already made up its mind and has troops entering your Civ.

The upside is that if they do break a gpt deal, you save all that money. :)
