There is often gold on the map as a "resouce" but it does not appear in the resource or luxury list, so I assume it goes straight into the state coffers (am I right?).
Do I need to build a road to it? or is it enough for it to be within my cultural boundaries? or do I have to mine it?

It a bonus Resourse like Cattle or wheat.

You need it in your city radius, you don't really need roads to it, but it a good idea to do it and mine it too.

Yep you are right, and to get that bonus, one citisen (not worker but your city) has to work on it.

EDIT : 2 post in the exact same time :)

YOur not supposed to link bonus resources such as gold to your capital, but It can get you extra commerce! :D
:goodjob:

Well if you build a road on it then you get extra gold :p Especially in democracy.

Incidentally, there is only a 1gp bonus for hooking up any resource (in Republic/Democracy) with a road. The bonus for commerce is applied whether or not a road exists. The tile only need to produce a coin in order to get a second coin for governmental type.

does mining do anything for gold or is just a road ok,also with regards to mines do they lead to pollution?

The gold "recourse" is just like a cattle, fish, or game, it's just a bonus to that tile. Except instead of a bonus to food or production it adds +4g to that tile when worked. Since you're using that tile, you'll obviously want to have it mined & roaded to maximise gold & production from it.

Nope, mines don't have anything to do with pollution.
