In the beginning of the game, I was slowly building up my treasury by 2 golds every turn. Then, all of a sudden, I received messages stating that treasury was dangerously low. I was at a hundred and some but now I had fallen to 0. I couldn't support a military, establish embassies or anything. I even filled my territory with roads but was still at -183 per turn. How do you go about working towards a huge treasury like in the thousands?
 
I usually try to make sure i can sucure gold mines in my area and make sure im getting at least 5 per turn in the beginning.
 
This seems to be a bit late but if everything fails, I would reduce my research to zero and start a war with rich neighbour, claimed a few cities to get cash for immediate relief, the units that were destoried in the war would also reduce your per turn payroll.
 
my most was 1521 gold per day (CLEAN - excluding the corruption, waste, science, and other stuff) so i get 1521 into storage every turn, he he. but i focused my cities on profit thou.

This is a fundamental game play disaster that goes way beyond the question of "getting more gold".

Each citizen in your towns that can be assigned to a terrain square will produce food, shields, and gold.
You have to have enough happiness+military police support to let your population work productively. Then you have to improve the best choices of squares to increase the power output of your towns.

Here's a list of things that are probably wrong with you game situation:

  1. Your towns are probably too spread out with too much wasted space.
  2. You do not have enough luxuries, temples, and Military police to balance your population happiness
  3. You do not have enough towns quickly enough to generate good cash flow.
  4. You are not maximizing the use of terrain squares adjacent to rivers with added roads
  5. You are not balancing the science research slider to perform quick research.
  6. You may not be adjusting the science research slider to save cash on the last two turns for any tech

    There can be many other probelms including building too many of the wrong units at the wrong time but most of these can be addressed by focusing on game fundamentals in the early game sequence
 
You guys will laugh when you hear this. I never even noticed which terrain squares the citizens were working. I was actually placing roads on tiles where there were no workers. Also I began managing my science research before I read these replies and it's really helping me out. I'm not too richthough, about 400-450 gold and it's still kind of early. Thanks for the help.
