Is there any particular strategy to better take advantage of a GA? Besides not getting it too early. Basiclly I do nothing different other than enjoy the added shields and commerce.

Hi !

I usually try to get my GA in the beginning or middle of the medieval age , as i think its most needed there (early conquering wars over, all the marketplaces and temples which then have to be built).

Have Fun!

well, a good way to take advantage is to go to war. that way you really get the extra umph out of the shields, but be careful, don't get into a war you can't win.

That is what I use it for. With that strategy you can take advantage durring any stage of the game. The way I do it is by the main use of victory Unit. I tend to play civs with Units in the Ancient and Medeival ages just to have a super war in the begining (atleast 20 turns worth ;)

Using war allows you to prosper the most. Find an anemy and send your 'production' their way :D

As long as you're out of Despotism, the age in which you want your GA is mostly personal preference. The important thing to me is to already have your city tiles improved with roads and mines as much as possible, since the GA only allows extra shields and commerce in tiles that are *already producing* at least one

WHEN TO GET YOUR GOLDEN AGE-Late Ancient Age or early to mid Middle Age, although sometime is better than never. :D

THINGS TO DO WHILE IN GOLDEN AGE-Go to war with someone weaker than you to take advantage of the extra production. Build wonders. Significantly improve your infrastructure.

THINGS NOT TO DO WHILE IN GOLDEN AGE-Change government (unless you're religious). Go to war with somoene much stronger than you.

Early or Mid-Middle Ages is the best time for a GA. (The Swiss Mercenary, Berserker and Knight replacements being the best GA-triggerers.) Your Golden Age is the perfect time to build Aqueducts, Marketplaces, Courthouses and Cathedrals, as well as the Sistine Chapel if you can nab it.

guys he wasn't asking when, but what to do in it

Play a Sid-level game and you'll trigger an Ancient Golden Age in Despotism just to survive! Forget wonders, you'll need the extra units to repel the never-ending onslaught of the AI's unwashed masses :)

I assume the advantage of going to war during the GA is ability to produce units faster with increased shields and the increased commerce covering the cost. Is there any other reason for going to war particularly during the GA?

I usually am greedy and I try to get as much cash as I can. That way I can buy techs later after the GA ends. It seems like you can never have enough cash on hand.

Build a lot of wonders. I actually don't fight wars until the end of my GA when there are a lot of extra units. Also, unless this is like Sid difficulty, I think it's good to research during your GA, the increased speed can let you research fast.

I aim to get my GA in the middle of the game (late middle ages/ early industrial). If you research the right techs you can throw your self out infront by 2-3 techs and stay there for the rest of the game allowing you to dominate the modern age.

Well ifyou initiate the war with the attack upon a unit with your speacial unit war can be the reason for your GA. So in that sence it war is a good reason for it and an initiator for it. Its a good chance to show dominence in your area :D

Just beware, don't build so many buildings or at the end of the golden age your gold go downstairs

During/before you GA, make sure that you balance all your citiesn tiles, so that each is producing at least one shield. For example mine over an irrigated Grassland and irrigate over a mined plains, so that both are producing one shield, then when the GA hits both will produce 2 shields, instead of the plains producing 3 and the grassland none.

Even if you're religious avoid switching governments, also depending on your luxury resources and government type, stay away from too much Waring. Hate to have cities shut down because of war weariness.

The GA is 20 turns of improved growth and productivity. Usually it is triggered by a UU, so you're at war. In this case you had better use it to build troops rapidly.

GA can also be triggered by building wonders with your civ's traits.

I prefer use the GA to build the 2cnd tier improvements in my core cities - aquaduct, market, university. It is a great time to build courthouses in corrupted cities, too.

I like using Celts and holding off on the GA until the Middle Ages if possible.
This may mean you have an early war with archers, spears and horsemen but
you'll make it ;) . Doing this enables me to build Leo's wkshop (my favorite)
and maybe another wonder if things go right. Not to mention ones I capture
with my rampaging Gallic Swords :D :hammer: . I also like Vikings with their
Berserks timed perfectly for Medieval GA, but you usually have to fight a
couple of early wars with them also :mischief: .
