I didn't find that barbarians all that troublesome in my game - yes they came quite a few time and I lost some three cities to them, but I always bought the cities back a few turns later and most of the time I just bought one or two of their unites and used them to kill of the rest.
That is one of the reasons why I hardly ever build defense in my cities....... Diplomats/Spies rulezzzz
