No wonder, the acronym says it all.
:flamedeviMS:satan:

Well, I think i can start writing about my game today. I´m somewhere in 1400AD so I know the world map already. ;)
I´ve started by moving both settlers towards the hut, popping it and getting a NON horsemen and founding Trondheim. My horsie went north popping another hut getting a city and later meeting Cathago. I didn´t make peace so they sneak attacked my horse and LOST, so I could quickly destroy them.
This enabled me to expand agressivily in all directions first west then north then nw. The units I gathered in the huts explored the map with great eagerness. I knew most of this Pangea map even before 1AD.:D
Some map-trading with the Zulus and Spanish showed me the rest.
I found a great SSC site early in the west south of the later encountered Celts. This gave me a comfortable science lead but my expension in that region also led to war with the Celts. My crusaders dealt with this problem during the next centuries and soon gave me control over most of the coninent. I sealed both AIs left in by placing my NON units at critical choke points.
With 3-4 productive cities I was able to build most of the wonders and soon changed to Democracy.
The unhappiness was my greatest problem and it also hemmed my expansion.
Anyway, it is a pretty solid game till now, had to start a small war with Zulus, will take them over later.
As a Deity game it was a new experience for me, but with the tactics I learned in earlier GOTMs I´m doing pretty well.

Hi all! This is my first GOTM, and I haven't played Civ2 in months! Deity level? Oh, why not.

Unfair, unfair! With so few civs, there is one on my doorstep?

My first two mistakes were not getting Pyramids :egypt: and Great Library :grad: You cannot win on Deity level without them. I tried to go the military route, got Sun Tzu and Leonardo, figured I could gun my way to victory :slay:

However, lost Michelangelo, too. Could not control my citizens enough to send out sufficient military to beat up anyone. Spaniards are totally whomping me since they had sufficient land to develop (who designed this atrocity of a GOTM?) and got both Copernicus and Newton.

But I have to admit, I probably could have won this game with more recent experience. It's amazing how much you forget about how to win when you are not playing.

You don't necessarily have to have the great library or the pyramid.

Instead of great library you can feed the right AI with techs (usually mongols or sioux), and research faster. It helps if you have a science-city, or a lot of trade routes.

Instead of pyramid, you can use "we love the president's day" in republic or democracy.

Diety isn't that hard if you read a little how to beat the game at diety level.

Let´s see, where was I.:scan:
Aah...

The war with the Zulus was over pretty soon but stupid Spain declared war, too. Fortunately the Viking armies were already in that region so they had both AI Civs down to one city some time after 1500AD.:hammer:
Now the direction the growing armada of engineers was the most important task of Viking leaders, we had about 200 at 1700AD and almost 300 by 1750AD. Meanwhile the Viking scientists displayed great skill and we entered the modern age some time before 1700AD.:grad:
So the time went by, our cities were WLTP growing and the world was turning greener.
The 1760´s brougth the knowledge of Space flight and the WSS Canute was quickly constructed as a symbol of Viking :viking: world domination.
The High Council is still debating whether to launch it immediately or to wait some more years and the beloved President Canute is having his own thoughts and would find it appropriate if the spaceship would land on Alpha Centauri :alien: on a memoriable day in a memoriable year.
Then everybody will bow his head before the might, skill and knowledge of the Vikings.:yeah:

:viking: All hail the mighty Vikings and Canute, President of the World and most magnificient leader of all times (this month)! :king:

The dream of countless generations was fulfilled when the WSS Canute landed 8 months earlier than estimated on Alpha Centauri and established the first base for future Viking exploration and colonization.
Now let us recall the final moments of our triumph.
The time has come to celebrate [party] the great achievements of our beloved leader Canute and to reward him with a sign of gratitude.
The best Viking scientist, historians, philosophists, military leaders and other great personalities have come together and are working out a score which will display the power of the great Viking empire. The High Council will then announce a rating of President Canute based on this score.
...
 ... :scan: ... :enlighten
...
When the final score and rating was announced the people rejoiced and celebrated for a whole week.
And Canute could finally sit back, enjoy what he has created and even go to sleep that night, something that was rare throughout his career.

As he awoke the next day he quickly noticed the unfamiliar surrounding and when he met his first servants in this new palace he realized that he was back in 4000BC. After some more information he became aware that he was now Alexander of Greece!
So, here it goes again...
:rotfl:

Not true at all. I used to believe the Great Library important, but I never bother with it on any level now. The super science city is a much better option. If you want technology, build Marco Polo's Embassy and trade it. Become the "science broker".
The Pyramids are good, but not necessary, because building caravans and all the happiness wonders will allow growth via We Love the President days.
I think a good combination of early wonders is Hanging Gardens and Great Wall (plus Sun Tzu if you can). This allows massive early expansion. You'll reach a point about 1AD -> 1000AD where you'll know you can't lose, even on a large map.

My science has been a bit slow in this game. It's 1800AD and I haven't got Space Flight yet (nearly there). A fast early expansion can kill off the development of the other civs too early, especially if there are only 5 as in this GOTM. I haven't been able to trade science with anyone for a long time (only the Zulus are left bec. they killed the Spanish).

Well, this was my first ever GOTM, and it didn't go exactly to plan.

I play all the time on Diety, so I wasn't too worried about that bit. But for the past few weeks I've been playing exclusively on real world maps. While I've pretty much memorized all the city locations on them, I'm way out of practice on random maps.

So anyway, I sallied forth on this GOTM with little idea of what I was in for. My first big mistake was not destroying the Carthaginians. I hate early wars - everything is so hard before nice, modern age units! - and I try to avoid them, but now I know sometimes theres no other option. However, I entered into an alliance with the Carthaginians that held until 1948 ad - almost five thousand years!

I did my best expanding anyway, and by 1850 ad I had about 16 cities, about 10 of which were actually any good. But these were all scattered about around the Carthaginians. Meanwhile, the evil Zulus had long ago eradicated the Spanish and were now taking up pretty much two thirds of the huge supercontinent. They pushed on the Celts, between them and the Carthaginians, and they declared war on me and orange too. By 1922 they were unstoppable, first pop with about 22 million people (I was second with about 13 million). However, now the Celts cracked and the buffer state defending my western colonies went down. The Carthaginians couldn't help, and I lost about three big cities. On top of this, Zulus grabbed SETI, raced ahead in science (I was 2nd here too) and whilst dealing with all that I had to clean up heaps of pollution.

While I managed to steal all the techs I didn't have, and delay the greens for ages in the west, I was still going to go down unless I came up with something first. Never having had much experience with nukes, I thought maybe they were the answer to my problems.

well, its 1948 nowand theres been global warming once. I still have 21,450,000 people, but that wont last. After my spy got caught planting nukes in a Zulu city the turn after I built Manhattan, everyone declared war on me (including my eternal allies, the Carthaginians.) Although I'm back at peace with orange, I still see no hope for victory against the Zulus. After all, they'll have space-flight soon and I have 12 cities, only about 5 of which are any good (and they will starve down to small sizes soon, seeing as how they're all on swamps cos of global warming.)

Hmmm, I guess the Zulus made me so mad, I forgot all about my score. Oh well. Maybe next month :)

First off, that's a whole bunch to Smash for all of the tips on playing Diety. I think he deserves most of the credit for the score I got.

I met the Carthagians very early and they went bye-bye.

Very soon after the Celts joined them.

I got extreme luck with the huts, the first four were a settler, a city and 2 chariots and the next four were barbarians (good bye to 1 chariot and a warrior I built). I went on an immediate expansion phase, building settlers and support troops only. I went through the list of Viking names by 0AD and was into duplicate names by 1000AD. I managed to cutoff any expansion routes for Spain and the Zulu Nation. After lots of small skirmishes with each AI(each costing them a city) Spain left the scene. The Zulus never got the hint that Knights couldn't beat tanks and infantrymen until they were down to one land locked city. That was about 1850, leaving 170 years of science catchup, infrastructure growth and spaceship building (and swatting the occaisional Zulu Fanatic/Partisan). The spaceship was ready in about 1950. I waited until about 2008 to launch and finished with a landing in 2018 with about 183M citizens, all of the wonders and score of 3805.

Well,I don't recall giving any specific advice, but I'll take the credit!;)

I have also finished my game.Spaceship landing in 1839 iirc.I hope Matrix has his e-mail probs sorted out.Should be getting bombarded with civ3 gotms. And few civ2 gotms :D

I also went for a wander.Got 2 huts(archer,25 gold) before stumbling on to undefended Carthage.I vaguely remember trading for some tech, then destroying them :)
Then a phase of city building, followed by war with the Celts. They had snuck The Gardens on me while I went for War Academy and expansion was becoming tricky with extra redhats.Once I captured that,I entered rabbit mode and knight rush.
Started to sweep across the map. Then the barbs hit.And they hit hard.I lost no less than 5 cities to them at different times. The Great Wall leveled the feild and then some.Still had to be wary of sending unaccompanyed settlers.Huts became unenterable unless I slapped a city near.

When I found the others, they had decent units for the time, but could not compete in a war of attrition.

This map was something.I never get maps like this.Make a great MP map.

I didn´t like this map at all!
No, let me say that more precisely.
I did like the layout of this pangea map, great for early exploration and conquest. BUT I needed up to and even more than 300 settlers to somehow cultivate this landmass and there were still big parts of desert and tundra uninhabitated in the end.:(
This was also a reason why I and everybody else had so many problems with the barbs. When your empire covers the whole continent without any area of wilderness in between you just have to watch your coasts. But with the big desert north of the Celts and the areas of tundra and forests to the NE and SW of the continent you had barbarian activity everywhere. And so you had to place many units, preferably diplos, everywhere, too.
Anyway, I managed it, losing only 3 cities in the ancient era but I recaptured them.:ak47:

I would suggest maps with a much smaller landmass for the next GOTMs. For example a map with seven civs, each starting on an island of their own, which is exactly the same for every civ and let´s you only place something like 10 cities or so! Custom made maps would be really something new.;)

I just took a look at the number of submissions Matrix has received ´till 27.12., and I´m surprised (in a negative sense)!
ONLY 8 SUBMISSIONS SO FAR!
I just hope that most people wait until January 2nd to submit.
If not...
...WOW I´m under the top 8 again!
...OH, there were just 8 participants.

I started this GOTM (most I don't), but December is a busy time for me, so I will not finish. I will say one more time, and keep saying it: MAKE THESE GAMES 2 MONTHS LONG and I'll play far more often, and even finish on time ocasionally ;)

Lucky, you can add a ninth to the list, I sent mine in on 30/31 I'm not sure which. I wasn't certain if I would even finish it, but eventually succeeded.

Spaceship was just out of reach, I had a poor midgame. I had to go for domination, only spanish and zulus remained, bought most spanish cities but the zulus wanted about 6-8000 gold for a city
,so I built up an army of Howies and marched in.

Two Key pinch points were heavily protected to stop the zulus getting into my territory until i was ready to invade. they threw no end of units to their deaths and achieved nothing. This was the first game that I used the strategy of placing a bomber over stacked units so that they cannot be attacked by ground forces, it worked a treat, they would just pile up against it, then on my go, i attack with a howie and take out 8+ units, for a while the zulus must have been losing 20 units per turn.

Finaly defeated them in 2014, not particularly impressive I know, but it was my first ever Deity game so I quite happy.

This is actually the second month in a row where I have been doing really well, but have not had time to finish. I have about 130 - 140 cities and am farming while building a spaceship, but along came Jan 2, so I didn't hand it in again.
Maybe we can have a separate section for people who don't finish on time to just look at each other's games?

Let me agree 100% (maybe 110%:D) with those that have suggested making the games two months long. I am new to the GOTM since I just found this site in November, and there was just no way to finish this game in a month.

Especially now with Civ3 out, all of my gaming time cannot be spent on Civ2, much as I still enjoy playing it!!

Perhaps we need to rename the GOTM to be the Game-of-the-Every-Other-Month?

Exactly the same problem here. I had my game going but my plans changed suddenly and I had to leave on the 29th and returned home only today. So, unlucky me, as I played quite much at the game.:(

I wanted to say that I had a very good game, but how could I say it, considering it's not finished? ; maybe even in the top 3 (good even if you consider the number of participants). Let's just say that I was planning a 1500 landing with ++150 good cities. Of course, I won't find out if I could do it, as I don't have time :D
