Ok, we haven't had a spoiler for this September game yet, and the October game is now set and people may be well into that, so there may not be much to say.
I decided on this smallest possible map to play for conquest.
I did do quite a bit of map analysis beforehand, for the first time trying to find where a few huts would be, before deciding what to do.
So I knew of the nearby hut, and decided I would pop it with one settler before founding the capital with the other in range of the whales, at worst on the plains square that is initially visible.
There is the risk of an off-path tech, and the play might develop differently if that happened, but if I got a unit or money that would be very helpful, and I would aim for monarchy as soon as possible.
I was unsure what the second settler would then do. It might depend on the terrain found, but I had been impressed by the value of mining a hill early in a limited situation such as we had with the recent game on the World Map. If this map did look mountainous I would try keeping the settler for work.
As well as one continent, as mentioned in the game description, I thought it likely that there would be ocean, and had a longer term plan to look for the chance to build a port on ocean 1 to help reach far off parts of the map.

We are pathetic and spotless, with 1 city of 1 person, but have already met 3 AI.
