GOTM 162 Spoiler

Unlike others, and as stated previously, I built only one city in homeland. Do not see the rationale for building more. Mapmaking was my second tech and ready in time for venturing out. With 3 (one tile) islands within immediate trireme reach why bother?
I wanted to have a second city for more shield production. Letting them share the shield-tiles (the hill was mined early) made me produce vans faster that were needed for wonders.
The other early decision was choice of government. Given the lack of huts, the geography (everyone on their own island which means little chance of tribute), and the space ship goal, I decided to go for Republic instead of Monarchy.
Interesting choice. I had not thought about that, especially because of shield support and happiness problems. I switched to republic only after Michelangelo was built.

So it seems I am quite behind so far:

-900 Curr.->Trade;
-800 Calcutta founded (island 11)
-775 Stop by island 6, sign peace with Egypt, gamble on techs and get Masonry
-700 Lahore founded (island 3) Will we need the LH? Would probably rech the big island cheaper by risking the gap, however we'd still speed up deliveries
-650 Trade->mysticism
-500 1st van for delivery built, dye to Egypt
-425 Myst.->Writing
-400 van delivered for 88g
~375 LH built

I had not thought about respawns by then and was quite surprised when a yellow warrior showed up on the big island a little later.

I never saw a map in which efficient conquest was not an interesting challenge!

I built 2 size-1 Settlers, developed the home island to the max including a mine, then grew for a while. Monarchy in 1050 due to carelessness. Built LH the hard way, and began conquest with elephants and triremes. I failed to find Major's 2-city main island idea so Monarchy was way too late.

I finished between 1ad and 1000ad.

100AD Madrid captured on main island.

140a Romans destroyed. Where’s the respawn??

180 – of course on the main island. Tenochtitlan destroyed. No apparent respawn.

After several more respawns I finished.

Later I realized that I was very lucky that no respawns happened on uncovered islands - evidently there is a small chance of that every respawn. I replayed trying to cover every island with at least a warrior before beginning conquest. That was very interesting, and I was able to improve my submission time.

I wanted to have a second city for more shield production. Letting them share the shield-tiles (the hill was mined early) made me produce vans faster that were needed for wonders.
If the island had one more shield or even arrow special, I would have given it a second thought but as it was the whale was always taken and by the time my hill was mined my trireme was ready too.

I never saw a map in which efficient conquest was not an interesting challenge!
...
I finished between 1ad and 1000ad.
Welcome back grigor; it has been a while.
The green star is going to be a race between you and haleewud (from among those participating in the spoiler of course).

Major's 2nd-city-on-plains idea is much the fastest both for science and an extra production center. Monarchy at 1650 is not possible without it. I thought about other cities on the main island but I in my mind put them on the forest, and the science hit seemed to mitigate the other virtues.

I didn't attack from the position described in my 1000 status. Probably I should have done. I may go back and replay for my own interest - one of the nice things about a small map is you can entertain such thoughts.

Instead I aimed to develop and use modern weapons to achieve conquest.

So I became a democracy and did lots of science. Then I spent 50 years of the 20th century as a fundamentalist state trying to eliminate all three opponents, but without capturing a city. I couldn't do it. I gave up. I built a spaceship instead, just in time.

This game has not ceased to amaze me. When I designed this map I knew this game would be different because of the small world, small number of possible cities, lack of shields before offshore platform, and lack of huts. What I did not expect was the barbarians. Knowing the AI rivals would be weak I picked roving bands option (-25). To my surprise the sea barbarians (there is not enough land for uprisings) have played a major role. They wiped out Egyptians in Major's game and both Egyptians and Greeks in mine. (Any others by other players not yet reported?)

My Romans just survived a barbarian attack. While they were under attack I was wondering whether the game would end if they lose. Has anyone ever been in a situation like this where all your rivals are eliminated by barbarians? Does the game end or do you have to conquer barbarian cities?

The start of this period was tense. I had just established a city on the central island and English had many units there. My rushed reinforcements shipped in and AI's stupidity of attacking strong units on a mountain (and losing without causing much damage) allowed me to prevail. But it took till 280.

Next challenge was getting the science city which survived the English up and running. Rushed caravans brought about Hanging Gardens and Colossus quickly.

Next big challenge was Michelangelo. I had several large cities with multiple entertainers despite having temples. With a depleted treasury and low shield production it took a while to get all the needed vans put together.

+0020 English horseman emerges from London and kills my wounded archer. The hut on central island is gone.
+0040 London is the only city on the central island.
+0060 English embassy established. They have horseback riding.
+0100 Mountain top archer easily survives English attack. Math -> Astronomy. Construction -> Roman -> Iron Working.
+0120 Stupid English keep attacking my archer and losing without even causing much damage.
+0180 3 English units outside of London killed; catapult turned vet.
+0200 English develop Masonry! I have to capture London before they build city walls.
+0220 Salt to Thebes for 88.
+0240 Gems for 120 establishes the first domestic route.
+0260 English lose another unit attacking my stack on mountain. Catapult kills Phalanx defending London. Lost my vet archer attacking London. The other archer kills a warrior in London. Domestic Silk for 132.
+0280 Astronomy -> Bridge Building. English ask for cease fire. I turn them down and luckily Senate backs me up! They offer horseback riding. I turn them down again. They offer 150g, I turn that down too. Next they offer everything they have (190g and knowledge)! Again my answer is no. Catapult kills English Phalanx. They have a fresh Phalanx outside London; why did they not move it in? Archer takes London for 95g and Horseback riding. English civilization destroyed. Granary in London will be sold next turn (after it goes from size 1 to size 2). The city shall be a settler farm till it can be uprooted. There are 8 irrigated tiles with road on the central island thanks to the English.
+0300 London's Granary sold.
+0340 Hanging Gardens built. 3 cities celebrate. T3L3S4
+0360 Colossus built. T3L4S3
+0380 Indus founded at the western corner of central island.

The Romans (and Russians) were destroyed. I had not actually met the Egyptians yet, but Crusaders were on their way.
