GOTM 48 - Results & Congratulations

Well, I like close competitions - and again, I wasn't disappointed! A trivial 4 points separated second and third - and first wasn't much further ahead!

Given the low difficulty, the major hurdle in this game was overcoming an agressive, powerful neighbour before he could do too much damage - after that, most of the other AIs could be rolled-over fairly quickly (especially after stealing Xerxes' lands for your own!)

EsatP proved to be the best at this - winning by conquest in 650 AD. A few turns later, Klarius just edged-out Xevious - but there was really nothing in it (domination vs conquest being the only material difference).

Summary of Medal Winners:

Congratiolations to all the winners, especially Niklas on that elusive domination award.

:woohoo:
No way I could be sad for a 4th place, it's leagues higher than I thought I'd ever end up. And that globe looks mighty nice. :D
I'm quite astonished that I could do it, especially considering my QSC was certainly nothing special (which is probably what cost me a medal). Anyway, I guess I should go write a spoiler. :)
I actually think I grabbed a rare chance of getting the globe. Warfare in this game was 1 part fighting and 9 parts logistics. Suits a micromanager like me fine. :D

@Megalou & Redbad: Seems the race is still on, one more for each of us :). Not likely that will happen again in 49 though...

Congratulations to all winners! :)

Congratulations to all the awardwinners.

@Niklas
Yes we're all up to 5 awards. But the competition gets larger: Tao, Shigella and Karasu. And even civ-steve could come within reach shortly.

You need not to fear me for GOTM49. If I submitted (which I didn't), I would only be competing for an award on wheels.

Congrats to all winners! :king: And a special thumbs up to EsatP for claiming gold in a mere 5 hours of playing time!

@Niklas: Your QSC might have been a bit low by your standards, but it looks as if you were the only one to pop a MGL pre 1000BC and to posses The Pyramids, which probably paid off post QSC.

@Twonky: Oh, but my QSC certainly wasn't low by my standards. With that start, I'm surprised it wasn't even lower. But compared to some of the other results there (13 towns by justjohn, wow  ), it wasn't really the making of an award...

And yes, the Pyramids probably helped me catch up and settle the home island faster. But in hindsight, two granaries in Persepolis and Pusan (cow town) could have done the same trick - most of the time all my other towns (on the home island) were maximized for production at +0fpt any, not much use of a free granary then... ;)

@Megalou: Thanks a lot! You planning on grabbing it in 49? :)

@Redbad: So I saw in the spoiler, my condoleances. Far too many going for the same victory condition now though, not many awards will go the way of the 5-award club this game...

Congratulations to all of you winners!

@Niklas: [Hej då!] I (justjohn) have been playing the GOTMs with my brother for some time now. Takes a bit more time (we don't always agree on the best plan), but is also more fun. However, since we do not live in the same place, we rarely have time to play more than the QSC, if at all. That said, we were very pleased with this GOTM (48), and we played a couple more turns after 1000BC. We eliminated Persia in 950BC, and soon made contacts with most of the other civs. We had even decided to go for an early conquest, but did not have time to do it.

We were very lucky with the placement of our capital. We have never walked more than 1 step before. But this time, given the very poor start and our time constraints, we decided that if we didn't find a better place, then we just wouldn't play this GOTM. This attitude is OK when you don't have time to play most of the GOTMs anyway, but is of course no way to do it if you play in a "series".

Another thing. Since we never have time to play for a long time, and we usually do not go to war early, as a result we did do some mistakes in the warphase. More properly executed we should have eliminated Persia before 1000BC. Hence this was a good exercise for us. :)

Congrats for all the winners! I was expecting EsatP to win this - a 650AD conquest in this scenario is really impressive. Too bad the guy didn't post a detailed spoiler, it surely would have been worth studying.

This is also my best gotm ever: 6th place in predator class, a lot of improvement from gotm41 (my 1st attempt) in which i ended up 36th in open class. Crappy startpoints seem to be my best strength, and considering that game 49 fits well in this cathegory, there could be another serious contender for an award :D

Congratulations to all the winners!
Especially to Karasu for 20K award.
But that award could have been mine, the 1st award ever, if I played the game officially and didn't screw up Palace jump.

My 20K date was 1786AD. But if I didn't reload I could miss the early GL and Pyramids and would lose anyway.
Oh well, I'll try 20K again for the next Emperor or less game and with a normal start.

i second that! it's just amazing how he managed to do that within 5 hours.

 Planning on? - far from it! The domination award is cursed. But another pointless try, yes...

I havnt time for normal game. I play 15-30 min and pause... In this game conquest must be around 300-350AD. Main idea - before must die farest AI. I test after game - it is more good variant.
1 step - persian
2 step - all forces france continent
3 step - new forces west continents
4 step - new forces NE cont
5 - all...

@Nata,
sorry for "stealing" that award... :ack:
I do share your feelings, as I have done at least two or three competitive 20k attempts in past GOTMs that I didn't have time to submit.
I can only wish you a couple very early leaders in your next try :D

Congrats to all the award winners! :goodjob:

It looks like there are 8 of us within 2 awards of a statue now, so it will be interesting to see who manages to claim the next one.

I thought it would all be downhill for me after claiming my domination award, but I have really met my "Waterloo" with these recent 20K attempts. I actually came in with the latest date for 20K in this game!

I would say that the recent predator "handicaps" (coupled with lousy luck getting early leaders) have proven to be real disadvantages. Giving the AI one extra level of production and cost advantage has been just enough to really frustrate my 20K attempts. In my GOTM, the AI completed 3 wonders before 1000 BC and I just managed to salvage the Great Library after the cascades occurred. I even managed to miss out on the Sistine Chapel by one turn!

Oh well, I have absolutely no right to complain. By my reckoning, Klarius has posted 6 extremely fast conquest victories (including 3 medals) in the past year and STILL doesn't have a conquest award. Now THAT is bad luck!

@7losses: How do you think I feel? I lost the silver medal by 4 points. :p But I can't complain, I got my first medal (and last I suspect) so I'm happy. Congrats to all the winners out there. This was a fun game, but I think I'll be moving on to CivIV.
