FYI,
In case anyone else has a similar problem, I wanted to share my experience with crashing that occurred last night as I played the GOTM 50 game. I found somewhere around 2000 bc or so every time I attempted to speak to a particular civ my game would close. Consequently I reloaded the last autosave 2 or 3 times (I tried it a couple different turns) and finally just stopped communicating with them. Then at about 1225 BC my game kept crashing at the end of the turn. I tried reloading a few times from the last autosave, to no avail. I then turned to google, came across some mentions of virtual memory being on causing a problem for someone (on an older version of the game no less) and decided to try disabling it.
After disabling VM I was asked to reboot. I rebooted, loaded up the last saved game again ended the turn. Lo and behold the civ that I couldn't talk to was demanding I give them some tech or go to war. Fortunately, no crash (and I told the civ where to stick it!)
I'm not sure if it was simply rebooting the comp or disabling VM, but anyway, it's something to try if you run into this same issue. Also, FYI, I am running Win XP.
