GOTM 50 Crash

FYI,

In case anyone else has a similar problem, I wanted to share my experience with crashing that occurred last night as I played the GOTM 50 game. I found somewhere around 2000 bc or so every time I attempted to speak to a particular civ my game would close. Consequently I reloaded the last autosave 2 or 3 times (I tried it a couple different turns) and finally just stopped communicating with them. Then at about 1225 BC my game kept crashing at the end of the turn. I tried reloading a few times from the last autosave, to no avail. I then turned to google, came across some mentions of virtual memory being on causing a problem for someone (on an older version of the game no less) and decided to try disabling it.

After disabling VM I was asked to reboot. I rebooted, loaded up the last saved game again ended the turn. Lo and behold the civ that I couldn't talk to was demanding I give them some tech or go to war. Fortunately, no crash (and I told the civ where to stick it!)

I'm not sure if it was simply rebooting the comp or disabling VM, but anyway, it's something to try if you run into this same issue. Also, FYI, I am running Win XP.

Hi

I'm not sure you've solved your problem. You may have just papered over the cracks by not opening a diplo screen with that civ.

- which version of Civ3 are you *actually* playing the game in (what version number appears in the bottom left corner of the fancy splash screen with the main menu)?

- which version of the start file did you download?

You should be running either 'vanilla', version 1.29f, with a mod pack, or PtW, version 1.27f, and you should have downloaded the appropriate start file to match the one you are running. If your answers to these questions don't ring any alarm bells for you, please email a copy of your most recent save file to me at alanh@gotm.civfanatics.net, and I'll try to see what's happening.

By the way, when I click on downloads on the GOTM main page left menu, I get the following:
The requested URL /games/gotm_mods.phptitle= was not found on this server.

Could anyone post a corrected link, please? I also cannot play GOTM50, although I can play the COTMs. Thanks so much.

Sorry, I've fixed it. One quote mark missing :( Thanks for the heads up.

Note that the Downloads are only relevant if you intend to play the GOTM on vanilla. In that case you need a 25 MByte mod pack installer that you'll find on that linked page or in the links in my signature. If you have PtW I recommend you play the GOTM using that, as it runs with no mods.

If you cannot play the GOTMs, please give the same information I requested above, and describe what happens when you try.

Well, I'd be interested to know if the original poster's problem was fixed.
AlanH: I'm emailing you a similar-sounding problem. It is much later in the game, but is a crash during the interturn, and diplomacy may or may not be involved...

I recall seeing a follow-up post/PM/mail that indicated that the original poster's problem was non-repeatable - just one of those things.

I have your email and am working on it. I don't think it's the same sort of problem, and it sounds suspiciously like a date-line crash. We've seen various infrequent reports of crashes and other strange behaviour on animations at the dateline. Turning off animations during the critical turn(s) has been known to help.
