"8 Triangles" small map, Indians, Emp/1S, Restarts on (?), RovBs, no techs.
Had some bad luck this time, but I also tried to play "creatively", which didn't help. Not a very tight EC game, but I fared better than the AI, at least. Though it was allowed, I didn't reveal the map, but a little black-clicking and Ali's description gave me the general idea. I started with the size one trick, and things went OK until I met the Greeks.
4000BC: Delhi(1) I want lots of cities (or settlers), monarchy, and mapmaking ASAP. Since that will happen before poly/etc, I wll expand to the large island first, and think about the AI later.
3400BC: Settler#2 with 20 food in the box. Perfect!
3250BC Bombay(2)
2700BC maps->cb
1850BC monarchy (tech and govt) ->bw.
1150BC Greeks declare war. I had about 10 cities, and wasn't worried enough. I didn't realize in time how exposed my empty coastal cities were, and I couldn't quite cover them all. The Greeks and I traded losses for quite a while (mostly triremes and a few cities).
900BC: Trade->Pots. Meet Romans and get their map. They have about 7 cities already, but give me 100g for peace.
700BC(approx): Pots->Wri, HG, more seesaw battles with Greeks,
600BC: Egypt = Pyrs, Wri->Poly
500BC: Greeks take one of my two barracks cities, and I feel forced to accept a cease fire until I can re-group.
475BC: I demand tribute and the Greeks declare war again. But now I have a dip ready, which buys back my city for only 27 gold ! And the barracks are still there (IIRC the AI usually sell improvements... or is that just barbs?).
425BC: MPE - not really urgent, since the map is almost known, and I don't need many AI techs. But it's "required" when restarts are on.
275BC: Egypt = Col.
225BC: I built a fortress near a Greek city and had placed a catapult in it, with several other units (one of my lame attempts to avoid routine EC play, and to punish the evil Greeks). The Greeks somehow destroyed my catapult leaving three other units alive! Sad, but it didn't save them.
100BC: Greeks down; no respawn (another weird event in this game!).
75BC: LH (also not really necessary, but for unknown reasons, I wanted lots of WoWs in this game).
50BC: GW (ditto) This was very useful in my recent PCC#3 game, so I thought I'd try it here, in a normal EC game. Build a few outpost cities right under the AIs' noses.
AD 1: Seaf->Phil.
AD 20: Romans build GL. They got a LOT of techs from it too (whenever I lost a city, for example) and actually challenged me with a race to Philosophy. But they didn't get monarchy until the end of the game.
AD 60: 4 Indian ellies raze an Egyptian port. Sad, I'd hope to capture it instead, for a walled base. I agree to peace with the J's in order to build a city there safely.
AD 120: Ouch! Egypt plays like a strong human player. A single diplomat (which I wasn't aware of) bribes TWO of my elephants, which go on to defeat TWO MORE of my elephants in the same turn. I have also built an outpost on the island, but it only contains a warrior, which can do nothing in response. In fact, the same dip bribes that city away on next turn, and I have to completely start over in Egypt. However, India does take Washington this turn.
AD 200: A van nets 240G, phil/mono->banking. I bribe my Egyptian city back for 85G. It comes with 3 elephants and a warrior!
AD 220: USA down with no respawn (hmm... very unusual game...).
AD 240: Ellies take Memphis
AD 260: Ellies take Thebes (and Pyr/Col). Egypt down with no respawn. I'm starting to suspect that respawns are not really on in this game, but I've already built a big beefy civ with roads and boats. Also, I've been keeping a spotless rep, in case I need lots of respawned-AI maps, which is the only thing keeping the Romans and J's safe.
AD 300: The Romans steal monarchy, which allows me to declare war. I raze Rome, buy 4 small cities, and capture a 6th one. They still have 3-4 left.
AD 340: I've built an outpost in Germany, but there are lots of units and boats coming from the homeland and from Egypt by now. Ellies take Berlin and Leipzig; Germans down; no respawn. An Archer (from a captured Roman city) and an explorer take another Roman city. Bribe one more IIRC.
Soon afterwards: I can't get the J's to declare war, and I can't believe respawns are on anymore, so - Ellies take Kyoto and Edo in a sneak attack; J's down; no respawn.
Soon afterwards: Romans down; no respawn.
I finished with about 70 cities, 15 crusaders, 18 boats, 12 dips, about 40 other units (warriors...). The DefMin says I lost 12 units in battle (only 3 ellies) but I must have lost many more units when I lost cities to the Greeks and Egyptians. Had HG, MPE, LH, GW, Col, Pyr, but the GL was lost.
