GOTM Semi-Noob Question: AI Tech Cheating

During the GOTM31 game every time I had a tech lead and changed eras at least one of the AI civs that I had at least a "1-2 manditory for advancement" tech lead on suddenly was in the same new tech era as me and they already had one of that era's brand new techs.

All I could say each time was: "WHAT... THE... F***???"

Is there any explanation for this.
Sorry if this shows my newbieness, but what is happening here?
Can I avoid it?

I'm going to assume from the way you wrote that, that some of the civs WERE at tech parity with you? So the ones behind could have aquired the tech from those civs to advance to the new era? And finally I'm going to have to assume that the civs you're talking about were Greece or Germany? They are scientific civs that get a free tech on entering a new era.

The GOTM is played with largely the same rule-set as normal Civ / PTW games, so this is a civ / PTW issue, not a GOTM issue.

It is probably due to what Xevious said. Also note that because this was an emperor level game, the AI-AI trades are heavily discounted. Probably what happened was one entered a new era, got a free tech (scientific) and then traded it to the others dirt-cheap.
