The results of the 8th Game of the Month are now up. This time there was record of 66 participants!

For the second time starlifter has won the GOTM, followed by Markone (2nd) and chofritz (3rd). Congratulations!

Also, starlifter has taken the lead in the Global Ranking, so the 'Shadowdale Dynasty' has ended. ;) He's still number one in the Hall of Fame though.

Also funny to mention: there are only two people who have played every GOTM so far: Cactus Pete and Smash. Keep up the good work gentlemen! :goodjob:

Very good job, Matrix! :goodjob:

You can expect to receive a submission from me this month. I have returned to the GOTM arena after 3 months of inactivity! :D

There is at least one error in the results, I conquered the world in 40 BC, not 40 AD and with a score of 62% (1242), not 31% ?? I wonder if there might be more errors, I'm surprised how few people conquered the world in the BC years.

BTW I think alain's 2640 BC conquest (the fastest finish) is a spectacular result, yet he's only number 61 out of 66.

nice to see some new medalists :goodjob:

66 suprises me also....just when you thought civ2 was dead.At least 66 are playing a plain old game of solo civ.:)

I'm dying of curiosity...how did you manage that? As I recall, I stated island-hopping before 1 AD...

Also (to Matrix), I'm sort of curious as to how you came up with the calculation for the GOM score. I can understand how the math works, I just don't understand why you set up the math to work that way...

Best regards to all,

Robert Marks

I was able to leave the island, too. But I have a very ineffective strategy and I waged a long, costly, ineffective war with the Japanese. Also, I usually play with map of earth, so I'm not really used to randomly generated maps.

Ah...

You really do have to knock out the Japanese as quickly as possible on that map, don't you? As I recall (looking fuzzily back...where I am it is now 1:00 in the morning), once I had both islands, I was doing fine.

Best regards to all,

Robert Marks, going to bed now...

You're telling me! [punch]

Sorry Matrix but I conquered the world in 540BC, not 540AD.
Fix it please.;)

Heh im not the only one. :)
Did you subtract the early finish bonus? otherwise I think Matrix got some work on his hands.

I will change correct the errors you mention a.s.a.p.

That will change with the next GOTM, because we've tweaked the rules a bit. Look at the rules page. Below I've updated the scoring paragraph: it shows a nice formula. I will use the square root of the normal score, this way a higher score will be less effective.

I don't really understand your question. Do you mean you wonder why we use this way of calculating the GOTM score? It's actually a bit of a long process... It is said in the rules page again...

But considering the fact that each month there were more partitipants, you actually progressed! ;)

I'm fascinated to see that alain managed to win in 2640 BC. It's difficult to imagine how this is possible, unless your opponents are conveniently wiped out by barbarians.

However, if the result was honestly achieved, as far as I'm concerned he's the true winner of the contest. If the game didn't end on eliminating all opposition, alain would have been able to go on building cities and population in peace and quiet, and probably exceed the scores of other people.

To rate him low because his population was low in 2640 BC seems to me a nonsense. So was everyone else's population low in 2640 BC.

I always play to win as quickly as possible (although I'm not very good at it...), and disregard the game's scoring system.

Other people have claimed errors in the results table, so I checked my own entry. The table shows that I (Jonathan Palfrey) finished in 1560 AD, which is correct -- though I'm not proud of it.

But the score and rating are given as 871 and 43%, whereas according to my own records they were 1314 and 65% respectively -- as I declared when submitting the game.

This doesn't matter much to me, as I disregard the game's scoring system anyway, but I'm a bit puzzled. I wonder whether the discrepancy is simply a mistake, or some deliberate adjustment?

TheViking, LeBigMec and Jonathan,

Read the rules page! It says:
"Because we have our own (much more effective) way of rewarding an early finish, the bonus score of the game itself will be ignored and the score will be calculated manually by pressing F9 and counting all the separate scores (from population, achievements, etc.) together."

Don't matter.

Anyway, the results have been updated. The wrong dates (AD instead of BC) have been corrected. Your scores were correct though (I haven't calculated with the AD dates). And Silvagem had submitted but I forgot him. He ended 9th!

Matrix, I think there has been another mistake. I just noticed i'm in the results of #8, but the game I submitted was GOTM 9, not #8
