My view regarding the use of different versions is that considering that the main goal of the GotM is to compare one's skill in playing civ2 to other players' skill, all players using the same version would be a great help, especially since there is so much difference in AI behaviour between these versions.

However, I also believe that this same difference in AI behaviour might be the reason not to enforce people to use the same version, since the game changes so drastically and people might not want to play one of these versions because of it, and it also could scare off new players participating in this competition if they are used to a different version of the game. :)

Btw, already 21 months have passed without having a rule that everyone should use the same versions, and it has worked out fine, so my opinion is just to let it be as it was.

Concerning this month's game, I just submitted and when counting my score I realized there was one other thing that I had forgotten about civ2, namely that wonders score points. Ooops! :(

20 points per...

I have used both 2.42 and MGE in GOTM.Not much difference in the end.I will tend to use 2.42 for OCC or fast spaceship. But it should be noted that ALL "great" Civ2 accomplishments have been done on MGE.Shadowdale and starlifter use it.Solo and sampson also use it.Ribannah also played MGE.Xin Yu also.
So it is safe to say there is no difference in difficulty.

I vote for a larger map next time. This small map made all of my usual tactics forfit, and my end game score shows it. (I never reached more than 70,000,000 pop.).

Now I know that the game also takes into account time taken but I fel that a conquest victory and/or an early finsh is like walking aout thr game half way thorugh.

I am sorely tempted to hand in a saved game at 1AD... I may get more points for that. even though I did get to 2012(ish).

*grumbles*

Those damn celts were attakcing me contiuously from start to finsh and hiding over those mountains made it imposible to do anything till it was too late, I lost 100 peace points :(. Still at the end they were still attacking me with elephants :)

Okay, it's late to be posting this, but I wanted to since it was the first time that I kept a log! Had great fun! Looking forward to GOTM XXII!

A couple comments:
- Why Masonry first? You could have started on CerBur... Actually, I did not follow your early tech goals at all. Were you going for early Republic? You got Monarchy after Lit and Philosophy...
- From 1000BC to 0 try to change governments on the 50s, because the change will only take effect on the 25 (925, 825,725, etc)
- What was the point of finally building the Oracle in 1828? Just the extra points?

What was your final Reputation?

Almost done! - it's 1820AD and the spaceship is getting large. I buillt on the spice square to use the size 1 settler strategy, which made the early game fun to play. But with all the dry squares, I ran into very sloooooow mid-game growth. Log to follow.

ElephantU, Masonry first only because I have a weakness for Pyramids. Generally, my tech strategy is to go for Monarchy first, grabbing Masonry and/or anything that will point me toward Philosophy/Monotheism along the way. When I was offered the ability to research Philosophy, I used the free tech to grab Monarchy.

After acquiring Monotheism, I aim toward Astronomy and/or Feudalism, then on to Invention. It was easier to avoid the "sea tech track" this game (Navigation et al) because of the configuration of the land mass. But I re-directed later and caught up when I figured out where the Aztecs were.

Good point about the timing of my revolutions. I still am a little in the dark about the oedo thing. :crazyeye:

Yes, I finished Oracle just for the points. I believe that my final reputation was poor, but I would have to pull up my game to find out.

Thank you for your questions and input! I appreciate them!

Abbreviated Log

When I first saw the dimensions, I was looking for a cylinder (80X20, compared to the 40X50 et all of the other regular map setups -- I figured first number must be the height) , so my glimpse of the south tundra generated a thought of poor terrain on a southern continent -- didn’t find out the difference until WELL into the game. Late, late, late into the game I double checked some of the locations -- if we’re counting diagonals, this looked like a 10X80, but the location data describe a 20X160.

Decided to try to use more little cities (ICS), made some serious errors along the way (details below)

Hut -- Archer
3900 -- 1st city
3650 -- 2nd city, discover Alphabet.,
3550 -- Archer opens hut, finds barb horse & archer dies; given open terrain, switch to build 2 horses
3350 -- CB
2850 -- Code of laws --
2600 -- We’re the largest civ !??! pop a hut, get a horse; in the next two turns pop two huts, get another horse & a barb (which we kill)
2400 -- meet the Celts, swap HBR for Masonry
2300 -- Found Malaca which will be come our SSC (too bad is is only a coupls of spaces away from the capital -- we’ll work on that snafu later)
2200 -- discover Monarchy
2100 -- (forgot to switch gov’t)
1850 -- Celts sneak attack! (Was I the only one who was surprised?)
1750 -- discover Write
1700 -- meet Persia -- trade for four techs, pick up Wheel, Pot, WC, Currency
1300 -- FINALLY revolt -- Monarchy next turn (have 4 cities, 12 techs)
975 -- discover Myst
800 -- (FR start GL)
775 -- pop a hut, get 5 barbs -- no dip in sight
675 -- discover Map
600 -- pay 50g for a CF with the Celts
450 -- BARBS sack Carthage ARGH form nowhere, lose a horse, dip & settler
425 -- buy back Carthage for 52g (no Palace, though); trade with French, get 4 techs -- Rep, Phil, Lit, Bank. Barbs sack Rusicalea w dip inside. (It is about this time that I reflect on the Celts to the west, French to the East & I’m otherwise at the top of the world -- I figure Persia must be to the south since I’m still thinking cylinder.)
75 -- Fr builds Pyramids after a couple of Wonder switches
1 -- Carthage has 9 cities, 20 techs, 400K pop. and still no clue that they’re living in Ringworld.

The dark ages, some stuff is rushed, the moves go fast and a save at 980 shows 15 cities, 28 techs, 3 wonders, HG, Col, Copes, all in Malaca (the only other wonders are Pyr & MPE, both in Paris)
1020 -- discover Mono
1200 -- discover Medicine
1360 -- discover Eng
1500 -- discover San
1510 -- discover that turns are still moving at ten years instead of 5 years as expected -- not a major problem except for one who would like to watch for oedo years (but then again this game I don’t seem to be watching much at all)
1540 -- Republic (tech coming in 4T @ 1.3.6) Have an embassy with the French, seen Persians, Celts, & know of two other civs
1580 -- 26 cities, 33 techs, 2.6M pop, 900g, discover Theory of Gravity; Celts gone
1590 -- a couple of camels & we have Theology
1620 -- Invention
(Took a long break)
1650 -- Democracy; 27 cities, 36 techs, 4.3M pop 1.5K gold; have 8 wonders, 3 foreign (Aztecs have GL -- turns out they’ll end up getting NO techs from it!), and 6 available. Units: 8(2) sett./ 20 inf/5 mount/ 1 gun/ 2(1) dip/ 9(13) camel
1680 -- Chemistry Malaca produces 220 beakers out of the empire’s total of 396
1700 -- Pay 50g for a CF with Zulu (have a camel near their territory; non demanded delivery pays about 3x the CF bribe.)
1710 -- discover Gunpowder. Finally disband Carthage -- Malaca almost full size
1730 -- discover Leadership; also discover about this time that the layout is a 20X80 framework & that the south is the other pole. Also discover that the distance is about 10 diagonals, so the “20X80” means very little room for the remaining civs.
1750 -- 27 cities, 40 techs, 7M pop. discover BB
1756 -- discover Exp (camel to Paris = 300+g; later two camels to Pasar…net 300+ & 500+, both demanded.; the game strategy begins to shift)
1758 -- discover Metal
1762 -- bought two elephants (82 g each; used one to kill a barb leader (150g) had to disband the other in the nearby city (unsupportable) overall a good deal. 25 more of these deals should make up for the barb events early on in the game.
1766 -- 28 cities, 44 techs discover conscription
1768 -- build SoL
1772 -- discover Tactics (to be continued...)

I was wondering about that too. I havent played king lately, so I checked the table in War Academy and it said 1000AD to 1500AD 10yr/turn, 1500AD-1750 5yr/turn, but this game seems more like Emperor: 0-1500AD 20yr/turn, 1500-1750 10yr/turn. Could that be due to "custom" map?

I noticed the same thing, an oedo wierdness. 2050NC worked fine for Monarchy. 60AD worked for Republic. Something was odd as I went to Democracy in 1340 AD. It worked, but I recall being confused that it worked.

Btw, I can finish whenevern I run out of time. 1766AD.

Very dry land, not much fun. The "Ring World" (Larry Niven?) made defense of borders trivial. Never many Settlers. Finished without Rail Road Pollution, nor Chivalry so IPRB=20 the whole game. (IPRB means I micromanaged constantly, always buying up to a round 20 shields for nearly everything, every turn)

It's funny how peoples games differ. GaryNemo, you finished by destroying the Zulus. In my game, they were destroyed in the first couple of goes by the French!

OK, Here is the kind of cut and dried log. THe interesting part is the first 2000 years, although I didn't play them as elegantly as I might have. For some resaon it didn't occur to me that Pyramids would be huge with all the slow growth...

My preliminary survey:
--Terrain near us looks plainsy (that's why 2 settlers). =>ICS with roads. But the Hut Contents will decide. The water next to us is a lake.

Three potential starting plans:
-building on the grassland is normal, followed by founding 2nd city quickly on first good terrain. Build a horse then a settler. Science will be slowish, but depending on the presumed special good stuff could happen fast. If it is a production special, could get 2 settlers down fast, then on to colossus. Or build colossus elsewhere on the main ocean. Wheat can be mined to silk.

-- Second alternative- build on presumed 4-special site and work spice. That way the hut could be opened first giving exploring room. Another city needs to be on the big ocean, but that can be later. The spice can be roaded in 2 later turns for faster science. Size 1 settler is not possible with this scenario...And the city is on plains and not on the main ocean..

--What about building on the spice square? There will be slow growth but good science at first leading to faster monarchy. Spice gives +1 food and 4 arrows in Despotism - could lead to size 1 settler followed by early Monarchy. 2 turns of grass + 2 turns of plains leads to Alph in 4 turns. Size 1 settler at 3200. 3 cities at 3000. (capital never builds setlers) Could have 5 cities by 2400 with some decent terrain. (as can be seen, that was an optimistic plan...) . Early Library will be huge. Growth will be slow, but specials will help. That sounds like an interesting plan.

1844 Paris builds Manhattan (the last wonder) Luxuries up.
1845 Hannibal the Wise 187%.

The End Game part 1
Usually after I have Tactics, I start my conquering plans. For this game I still had areas unknown (Zulu & Aztecs to some extent). Caravan deliveries are sporadic, but significant deliveries include 1 to Paris for 274g & another to Pasar for 528g. The SSC generates 354 of the empire’s 565 beakers with science at 50%. Next set of turns have techs arriving at 1 per three turns, with Nav, Phy, Mag & Steam all arriving by 1800. We build Magellan, Paris build’s Adam Smith -- that city now has three Wonders -- and two turns later, Paris is ours.

1804 -- RR; 1810, -- Elec, 1818 -- Refr; All right. I’ve had it. Take Pasar, but this effort is going too slowly. Still have a Supreme/Spotless Record -- time to go fundy & clean up the mess.

1822 buy Arbela -- Persia is gone.

1828 -- ARGH! a barb boat appears off the southern coast & dragoons pop out slaying my rifle defender in Akrages -- do I want to save the city to the cost of 13K? (What 13K?!! How did I ever have that much money laying around? I’ve so busy building, moving, finally setting up boat chain that I haven’t paid attention to the coffers piling up -- I could have been buying!) No I’ll let that barbs have the city -- I’ll buy it back. however, the loss is extreme -- the city has three galleons -- one with four camels al bound for the newly found Tlatelolco (a decent sized city on another rock, on the other side of the world from my SSC). The loss of the city was shruggable; the loss of the camels was a round of technology.
1830 -- Discover Industrial; build/buy Darwin’s. bribe Teo’s (624g, get 487 backg Darwin’s brings Commy & ESP
1842 -- Buy Badepi for 472g, get 572g back (plus a city, infrastructure & units as a bonus) not a bad deal at all. buy Tex (Aztecs down to one city)
1846 -- Discover Corp
End Game part 2
By 1852, the last Zulu city is purchased, the last French city becomes a capital, but it is taken & both of those civs are gone. Pop = 11M & the gov is switched to Demo. For the next ten turns, the population nearly triples, ten techs are discovered, one per turn as the boat chain delivers three to five trucks -- undemanded collecting 574g and demanded freight two and half times that, 1435g (which is about 2/3 of the beakers required for an advance).
1862 -- sent to D of M.
Lessons Learned -- 1) spend $$ keep the coffers to a manageable level -- sometimes poverty has value too, 2) get the boats out -- make distant trade a habit.

I read this entire thread just now. This month I got to a late start due to an out of town trip. I wanted to do an OCC but when I saw Duke saying several people submitted in a day, I figured I will go for a quick conquest instead.
Since I never go for a quick conquest I decided to take my time and be careful in early game and I did that till about 500BC. Then I did not get a chance to play till I had only a few days late. There was not enogh time to switch strategy to space ship and there was not enough time to carefully plan my conquest. I had to rush through carelessly and my empire was a mess. I finished before 10pm on Nov. 5th but I had little fun! What a waste. I finished in 1796. I will post the log later.

One question: aside from freedom from bribery, is there any other advantage to Democracy over Republic in OCC?
The only other serious advantage is that you can set the Science rate above 80%. This becomes crucial in late game when you are trying to research space ship as fast as possible. Thus, typically, you do not gain anything by switching to Democracy as soon as you discover it. But you may as well do it, since you have to do it later on anyways.
The other minor advantage of Democracy in OCC is that your Palace turns one content citizen into a happy one. This helps later celebrations (beyond 20).
As already discussed the fact that there is no corruption in Democracy is irrelevant in OCC. So is the fact that a city that revoltes for two turns consecutively overthrows the government.

Also someone once told me that Isaac newton and copernicus would not work together so I did not built them in the same city although I surely could have.
That someone is most definitely wrong. They work great together both in Civ2 and Civ1. Those two plus Colossus make a Science city. A strategy used by many players including myself.

My view regarding the use of different versions is that considering that the main goal of the GotM is to compare one's skill in playing civ2 to other players' skill, all players using the same version would be a great help, especially since there is so much difference in AI behaviour between these versions
I, and others, play on the Macintosh. I am not sure, but I think it is unlikely that the Mac versions correspond to the Win versions exactly. So we have to just let this be.

I beg to differ. It is nice to have something out of oridinary every time to keep the challenge going. Well, maybe not every time, but most of the time. Looks like there are quite a few people who want to play on a real Archipelago. I too would like to do that. I volunteer to submit a map and write an essay on points to ponder.

Why did it take Aztecs more than three turns to finish Colossus when there were nearly done? Whenever I get that warning the AI gets done the very next turn. They would beat me even if I am due to finish the very next turn as well. The only way I have found to beat them is to purchase the remaining sheilds. Could others please comment on their experience?

More than just military strength, they represent the "power rating" of the civ you are talking to. Your own power rating you can find from the Foreign Advisor screen (once you meet the first enemy civ). The power rating seems to be based on population, gold and techs. Not sure the exact formulas there, though... (anybody got a link?)

I did OCC on GOTM21 and tried to keep myself Mighty, which corresponds to the KeyCiv of Orange (what a coincidence!). Lost it a few times when my treasury got too big and my beaker count quadrupled! Rush-Bought a few Improvements to get my treasury back down and voila. Most of the late game I was doing a tech every two turns, with occasional one turn techs when I delivered a freight to the Aztecs. Lotsa fun, but finished too late to submit. Sigh.
