Does a governor have control over a worker who is on automatic control?

If I set my governor to emphasize commerce (or food, or production) will the workers from that city produce accordingly (i.e. irrigate for food, mine for commerce, etc.)???

Without looking in the manual, I'm assuming this is correct, but wansn't completely sure...

Also, what are your strategies in regards to workers...do you automate? I play with China and being industrious, workers are a big part of my overall play...just looking for some ideas on how to maximize their effectiveness...

Love to read your responses!!!

Your governor will only manage the citizens in the city, not the worker units making roads, mines, etc.

I NEVER automate my workers. Read cracker's tutorials in the War Academy to understand why. The shortened form of it, though, is the simple fact that the AI, whether it be a rival civ or your worker's AI, does not look at the long run, only the short run. I like to build roads to future city sites, and the AI will not do that for you.

Go read the stuff in the War Academy, and you will learn a great deal. There is also a Newbie FAQ on the General Discussions board, go check it out, too.

Not only do I rarely automate workers, but I never use the governors either. Not sure, but I think the AI does a worse job as governor than it does managing workers. Micromanagement is tedious, time consuming, and boring, but it's necessary.

I agree on that as well. I never use my governors, though I will see what they will recommend sometimes, just to get an idea of what may be a good idea. More often than not, though, I just forgo the governor and take micromanaging into my own hands.

Interesting...

I've found the governor function to be very helpful in dealing with the constant balancing act involved in keeping a citizenry happy...however, I can see where it would be better to manage the cities single handedly.

I'll 86 the governor except to manage moods...but I'll be quick to override if need be. I'll see how that goes....thanks for your input and thanks Night' for the War Academy reference!

The only time I automate them is when all my 21 tiles inside every city has been worked on and all my cities are connected with rails.

At that point, I let them loose with SHIFT-A, so they can rail everything else and work on tiles I really don't care about (hell, why not... sure beats them staying put inside citiy walls). That and the fact that their primary function is to clean pollution, even if they're on automate, so you don't have to worry about pollution either.

In another words, never leave them on automate from the get go... bad, bad, bad :)
