How do you get a AI civ to become gracious? I once gave a gift of over 9 techs to the Aztecs and all I ever got was a "Polite" O_o

Basically the AI's attitude is about more than just "what have you done for me lately." Its about common goals, respecting each other's culture, common backgrounds, good trade experiences, and past aggression. Then add in the things you do to others can affect their opinion of you.

I find they normaly start arse kissing (as it states in my games) when their getting a few luxuries off you or you have a common enemy. Like, one time, I had a Roman Knight on my land and I really, really wanted them to declare war on me. I checked to see if they had any MPPs & found they had one with England, so I payed Libby, who was anoyed with me, a little visit & offered her a MPP which, to my suprise, was an accepable deal on its own but I got a tech & some gold PT with it so it worked out for every one.
Well I did the usual demanding of many cities from Caesar until he was totaly pissed with me & started shouting. I then pushed chair back from the negotiation table, stood up then leaned forward, nuckles on the table for suport, until my face was but a decimetre from his and said, in a calm steady voice:
"Well then Caesar, how about you tell that pathetic thing you call a millitary to trot along back to mummy & get the f#@k off my carpet now. Otherwise it shall be known that you will be the aggressor while my troops tear through your villages & cities, slaughtering your men and violating your women. I won't tell you what they'll be doing to the children, because I know how weak your stomach is Caesar. So what do you say that deal 'eh?"
Caesar's response was crude & quite annoying, but it did the trick. Shaking with rage, he planted a well aimed ball of phlegm into my left eye. Very well, I said, (straighting up & wiping my eye with a crimson silk handkerchief I happend to find hanging from Caesar's breast pocket) so be it. We shall speak again when you're down to your last village.
Then I simply ended my turn. The Knights presence on my land (it didn't attack, it just moved closer to an unprtected city) caused England to declare war on Rome and that killed the possibility of fighting on two fronts (we were the only the 3 of us on the continent).
Well, What I'm trying to say, is that Libby, out of all people, went from annoyed to arse kissing in one turn, all because I forced her to go to war with one of her friends (they also had an active trade going).

Get them to go to war against someone and get an ROP a MPP and a MA. Luxuries and techs will help too. But i find these above abbreviations 
to be the best way.

Barbaric... do it the viking style end tie up your enemy to a bend tree, release the tree and see him being split apart, now thats what i call fun lol
