I have read in a Civ II strategy guide that if you mine a hill that has the grape resource, the resource will disappear. Is this true?

No, the grape resource doesn't disappear, if you mine the grapes, the effect is just like on a hill, three extra shields. That gives you 1 food, 3 shields, and 4 trade, add a road and it's 5 trade. The mine makes the grapes like covered up and sticking out the bottom. It's a great resource.

Yeah, visually it disappears, but the trade still shows in the production window. Wine (grapes) is one of the few resources that I do not transform into plains or grassland. :yeah:

It's also a good resource on which to build a city, if there are enough high food producing squares nearby.

Resources don't deplete in civ2 like in civ3.It will be covered by a mine icon but you can still see it by pressing T.

Founding on a hill is as good as founding on a plain, foodwise. If you start mining with a 2nd setler first, you'll get the 2 hill shields, too. As you gain imporvements & tech (e.g., RR & Supermarket & Superhighway), you'll get the benefit of the in your city, too.
