Hi I've just bought CivIV and am eager to start but am having problems with the graphics and would like some hints as to what it could be.

I am playing on a laptop without internet access so can't update with the patches I've seen mentioned.

I'm also not sure what type of the capacity of my video card can someone pls tell me how to check it.

The main map of the game is black. I can just make out the characters & terrain. It doesn't seem to be lightening up.

when people appear on the screen I'm only getting floating eyes, lips etc - no real details.

Is someone able to assist? There is nothing more frustrating than buying a new game and for it not to work.

Launch "dxdiag" from the [Run...] on your Start menu (assuming you're using Windows). When it's done it's thing, "save all information" to a text file and paste it here in a post. It'll give information on most of your relevant hardware for folks to take a look at. There are posts here that deal with black terrain and eyes if you look a bit.

Mum's drivers are somewhat dated. I'd start there.

Concerning your patch plight; I used to work in a hardware/software store. It was not unheard of for folks to come in with notebook and have us copy a patch to it from our internet when traffic was slow. You may consider seeking something like that. The patch 1.52 is a pretty big improvement for most players.
