Great Generals...

hmm.. I loke iffi's ideas but how about couple the 15 turn spell with a requirement that the spell caster must be higher than level X (6?). Maybe each level after that reduces the price. oh and no heroes allowed. I picture it as formal education for a leader of the unit which becomes the general.

5000 gold...

I at least want a general for all my heroes (maybe not Loki) and tier 4s. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

If however the problem is that extra 1 stength (hardly) or 1 xp gain (possibly) make a hero too powerful, prevent heroes from getting it? Could be tied to the hero promotion (Orbis does this). The dragons could still get it but dragons are supposed to be steamrolling units. And Baron but that just might make him useful.

If you do prevent heroes from general promotion, at least allow 'strong' after you have heroic strength and defense 2?

I don't mind Great commanders being rare and all, but they seem kinda weak compared to how rare they are to get. Would be kinda neat if say, they gave the empowered promotion to all units in the same stack as them based on how many combat promotions the commander has (acquired via passive training at a command post), or some kinda passive boost to allies. Right now all they really ever do is tag along as your heroes "side-kick" and general back seat driver.

That's why I said, don't let heroes get led by warlord. Some of them are pretty much warlords themselves. Or adventurers (that word has tons of negative connotations for me) who don't really take orders from anyone.

It is too radical a suggestion I guess but here goes...axe all heroes. No matter how extraordinary they are, can they take out a whole company of regular hardened troops? Gameplay beats realism I guess...

Bah keep heroes, I'll play some RoM and get fed up with the uselessness of veterans and come back to praise double power promotions and boosted xp gain.

I like the idea of having level 6 combat units able to join cities as a commander of some sort training units of its type. (ie, I retire my level 6 axemen to a city as a GP, and he provides some xp to all melee units trained there).

THIS is a great idea, but it should probabaly be higher. A solid unit you take care of, or who just has good luck, can reach far higher levels. I'd say level 10 for everyone, and level six for the Sidar (because Specialists are kinda their thing.)

Yes. They can. Although I should note that nothing says these heroes are marching to war alone and unsupported. Who says that Gildon Silveric doesn't have a small elite archer company with him? Who says that Rantine isn't followed around by some big burly orc bodyguards? Who says that Mother doesn't have dozens of her brood skittering around between her legs?

Yeah, I've always seen them as the leaders of elite companies (aside from the Dragons/Angels) in the same way I don't see a squad of swordsman as "just three guys with swords." Does it really take that long two train and equip three guys? No. Graphical representation of larger numbers.
