I'm playing the Babylonians on Regent level, using Conquests and with the latest patch (v122), and I'm currently engaged in a war with my neighbours, the Maya (last time they send four damn settlers across my land!)

I have just got a great (military) leader, to which I thought 'Great, get him to the capital and we can whip the Temple of Artemis out from under the noses of the AI'. However, on reaching Babylon, I found his only ability was to build an army, not to rush production. This I have done, and proceeded to kick the Jaguar's butt, however I would have quite liked the Temple of Artemis. I have seen this happen once before, when playing the Rise of Rome scenario, but I wanted to build an army then anyway and I thought I might just not have noticed the 'hurry improvement' button (I don't have the best memory, so I've learned not to trust it too much).

Are there certain types of military leaders who can only build armies, not hurry improvements, or is this a bug? Or am I the only person who has ever experienced this? Thanks!

Conquests has a new type of Leader, Scientific Leader, that can be created if you are far enough ahead of other civs in science - I THINK it's created when you move from one age to another. Unfortunately, this type of leader can rush production or an advance, but the Military Leader cannot, anymore.

Scientific Leaders have a 3% chance of being created when you're the first civ to research a particular tech. It's 5% for Scientific Civs. And you can get potentially two for being the first to research Philosophy and whatever tech you get from that, and potentially two from getting ToE. It's happened before.

And don't count on getting many (read: any) MGLs when you have an SGL sitting around. But you can get an SGL when you have an MGL or even another SGL just sitting around.

The reason your MGL isn't working on the Temple of Artemis is because in Conquests, I think you can only rush small wonders. I think. :hmm:
But every body is right about the SGL though. :D

Aaah - that'll be why I could use my MGL towards the end of the Rise of Rome scenario to rush the Forbidden Palace. That was what made me think I'd just not noticed the rush button on my great leader earlier in the game.

It all falls into place!

Happened to me in the sengoku conquest.. Think I've still got the save somewhere

I think the whole reason behind this was to make it harder to human building all those wonders. Many including myself were succesfully implementing "MGL fishing" tactics and then building wonders in single turns.
Firaxis probably thought that this way they would make game more competetive.
Personally, I only get SGLs once in like 6-7 games and only when you i for scientific civilization, so all this time in C3C i had to go all 9 yards when building wonders.

Also the SGL, can be used to boost science by 25% for 20 turns (I saddly had to do this once in the middle of the Industrial Age when no Wonders were left to build and none would be available for a long time)

Also Armies now have blitz and move one more movement than the unit with the lowest movement point in it. I.E. an Army of all Knights, moves 3 points, an Army with 2 Knights and a Medevil Infantry moves at 2 points.

Yes, although the few times I tried this, it didn't seem to have any effect. Last time I saw a discussion on this on CFC, the consensus seemed to be that this feature seemed to be broken. Is this still the case, or has it been fixed by 1.22...?

One other thing that I have noticed with MGl's is that they seem to be a lot more common in C3C. Although the odds haven't bben changed (at least as far as I know). In CIV III and PTW, I considered myself fortunate if I got a few (3-4) MGLs before Military Tradition, now 6-8 leaders is par for the course in C3C.

If the odds haven't changed then you may just be managing your elite units better
