I suspect you cannot get a great leader while in a golden age.

In a recent game, I was generating great leaders fairly regularly until I started my golden age then I didn't get another until after the golden age. Once the golden age was complete, I was generating them quite regularly again. With the amout of warfare during the golden age, I should have generated 3 or 4 great leaders. I had none saved and was having around 4 elite victories per turn.

This could have been a statistical anomoly but I don't think so. Part of my strategy that game was to generate great leaders to build wonders. The absence of them during the golden age resulted in my missing a couple of wonders.

I'm guessing statistical anomaly. I'm rather certain that I used a Mounted Warrior to trigger a Golden Age a couple of nights ago, and then during that time, generated a GL which I used to build a wonder.

But that's just memory, and will see what happens in the next game I play.

Is it possible that most of the elite units you were using had already created GLs? And after the GA you had built new units?

Prior to my golden age I had a brief builder phase of about 20 turns. During this time I researched a number of techs and upgraded my units for the next war.

My golden age started at the begining of that war with all veteran units. They became elite quickly but never generated a single leader until the turn after the golden age. I then got a leader every 3 or 4 turns after that.

Edit: I also had built Heroic Epic before my golden age started.

It would also make sense to look through the Always-War Succession Games. Find where the GAs were and then look for reports of leaders.

Found a GL in a Golden Age here!

In Dark Sheer's post, the Golden Age is triggered in 70 AD. Then in Brian J's post, a GL shows up in 310 AD, which falls within the time range, 20 turns, of a Golden Age.

So you just had some bad luck.

Seems your right. Their notes say the GA ended in 360, 5 turns after the appearance of the leader. This game was also using v1.21.

In future, I think I'll stick to pre-building any key wonders instead of hoping for a great leader. You would think averaging 4 elite victories per turn would get you a leader within a few turns though. I didn't count the elite victories but there must have been around forty to eighty before I got a leader the turn after my GA ended. With Heroic Epic, I had a 1 in 12 chance of generating a leader which should have given me 3 - 7 leaders.

Actually, the Heroic Epic improves odds of units being promoted from regular to vet, vet to elite, but does not improve the chances of a leader appearing from elite combats. The Heroic Epic just makes it possible to get to elite status quicker and in greater numbers.

I've had some stretches too where I missed out on some Wonders cuz I was figuring GLs would build them. It's the chances you take.

That's not what the manual says.

Civ3manual.pdf page 101 says

Heroic Epic Increases the likelihood of leaders appearing.

just fyi:)

The Heroic Epic is supposed to give you a 1/12 chance of getting a great leader while regulary it would be 1/16, I never get serious with my wars until I get military tradition and cavalry so I could just make armies thought

My bad. I got confused with the militaristic trait.

BTW, does the Heroic Epic have better impact on Militaristic civ?

If you're a warmonger, it's better to build an army with your first Leader, for the ability to get the Heroic Epic.

I almost always make an army out of my first leader unless there is a wonder that I really need, or I am playing a game where I am going for a UN victory (no combat, just trading and kissing up)
