Ok so here is the deal. I get a great person science, arts whatever and I'll sometimes save them to use them for a Golden Age. But I have had a situation where I had 4 great scientists, that I fortified to wait till I had enough to trigger a GA...when I finally have enough the golden age button is greyed out. I mouse over it and it says need 3 more to trigger golden age. In the city I can see 3-4 more so I have enough to run a GA but it wont give me an option. I should have screened it but I didnt. Why is this happening?

You need different kinds of :gp: to run a GA, like a GS and a GP, you can't use a bunch of GSs, which you should be building academies with and settling instead of wasting them on GAs, unless you're in a war, and you're losing, I guess.

oh crap...DIFFERENT types lol I didnt know that.

I wasnt really losing war at the time, so I should build academys instead of saving them?

Depends.
late in the game, the extra beakers from the academy cannot catch up with the beakers from sending him to science gulag (lightbulb him).

Early in the game, the are far more useful, true.

In the midgame, you need to decide if you WANT that tech NOW (under attack and can lightbulb machinery for crossbows), or have a perma-boost.

But if you happen to capture a nice science city, or say you find a good place to build your National Park that will give you twelve scientists, then the Academy can still be a good choice, couldn't it?
