I have read of complaints that the Guerilla in CIV3 has no use. My response: It has a use. I had managed to find a way to use guerillas against one of my enemies.

It's very simple: Send them into enemy territory in two or three groups of four, and just sabotage their operations, (i.e. pillage railroads, resource links, etc.) therefore weakening their war machine. Now I know that explorers are much faster, but they get killed much more easily (especially in PTW), and all it takes are a few infantry to take them out of the ballgame. So IMHO, the guerillas are the most effective unit for screwing up your opponents manufacturing capability.

I prefer infantry for that tactic. The movement ain't quite the same as an explorer, but it's still good movement and can defend itself more than the explorer.

conquistadors can do that

I can't wait to get the expansion. I should of got it last year. But guerilla war fare is actually effective. I have tried and I saved myself from several artilleries

does anybody here create scenarios

If it's possible I'd give them Ignore Jungles trait and give them a movement of 2. I tend to think of guerilla warfare as jungle combat for some reason. It could be very good for the Aztecs on most world maps with all those jungles in SA and CA. It would let them beat off attackers and quickly go back into the jungle and attack from a different side.

That's true, Conformist. However, in my case, I need all my infantry units for mass charges a la WWI. At least until I discover Motorized Transportation. In that case, the infantry are then used to cover my butt while the tanks kick it, but the guerillas are still used to disrupt their war effort.

I agree... It's interesting. You can easily mod that.

ofcourse..simple as that. I'm taking it into my map i'm making, but i need more xtra troops. It would be nice iff there would be some option that units are invicible in Jungles, forest, hills Etc

Another thing which WOULD be nice is giving guerillas attack/defence bonus when in jungle

one positive trait of the guerilla is that it is an upgrade in the warrior family line.

if a player uses the strategy of creating a bunch of warriors and then suddenly upgrading them to swordsmen for an early charge, a quick en massee upgrade to medival infantry and then later to guerilla give supplementary forces that can supplement more advance war machines or, at the very least, hold on to capture towns.

think of it this way, with guerrillas mixed into a stack of more advanced military, the more advanced end does not have to stay back to quell rebellions in cities that the player wishes to keep.

squidd

I use the paratrooper for guerilla/special ops manuevers. Through the editor I increased their movement to 2, which also gives them the ability to retreat. Very effective.

If your using Guerillas that you've not built from scratch but upgraded from Medieval Inf, well it's a good idea. If you're actually building them, you'd better build Infantry; they cost the same.

Also, you're better off using (artillery-supported) cavalry for that purpose, as they have the same attack as infantry & guerilla and can retreat. Just be sure to cover them with infantry.

i would suggest using the guerillas with the artillery (and a few infantry too, and use infantry for pillaging, and here's why:

With a couple of infantry guarding your guerillas and atillery, you probably won't lose any attackers. Since guerillas attack with the same attack as infantry, I'd use them first, as they are less valuable, and equally effective.

The inftary make better pillagers since they have a much greater chance at survival, thus less WW and more pillaged squares and a stronger army.

Yes movement of two really gives the Guerila a advantage because the whole point of Guerila warfare is attacking retreating then attacking them again.

maybe guerilas should have hidden nationality or invisible.

anybody here create scenaros
