To select the mods you want to run : Mods > Browse Mods > Installed. Now tick the mods you want to use in the game. Now go back & start a game (Mods > Single Player). I hope it helps. :)
Edit : Welcome to civfanatics ! :goodjob:

well the problem it seemed was that the mods which i downloaded were not being shown on the list after installation, having browsed through this forum i managed to search for the solution which was to rename them as .7z and then extracting, cheers anyway

why are you doing it the hard way? Just go into 'mods', go into the mod browser, go online, find the mods you want, install them, download them, then enable them.

Also be aware, since a patch JUST came out, many mods may not work until their creators can update them to be compatible with the newest patch!

You don't have steam but you have Civ V? :dubious:

If, somehow, you have civ 5 without steam (and I don't even see how that is possible, are you sure you don't have it?), you will probably just have to install steam anyway. Although before you do that I would go into start menu and type 'steam' into the search. I'm guessing that you actually have it, lurking in the crevasses somewhere, because I'm pretty sure you need steam to have civ 5.
