I had not considered all of the "options" available for choosing leaders. Starting with different techs would seem to make the most sense of course. I assume both civs start with the same knowledge, ie, we don't have to wait for alphabet to exchange knowledge.

Sharing technologies with your teammate's civ is automatic - you automatically discover any technologies that he does, and visa versa. You can also both research the same technology simultaneously to speed it up (theare combined) - i.e. exactly like a normal permanent alliance.
