There must be some fans of the American horror/wierd fantasy author H.P. Lovecraft here, right?

I'm rereading old familiar stories of his in a new packaging called "Dreams of Terror and Death", basically of his Dreamworld stories which I prefer to the outright horror of the Cthulhu mythos stories.

And it's still very entertaining to read and I'm still moved to frightening when I read them at 3 in the morning. "Nyarlathotep" being the one that freaked me out the other night.

I've read four tales of him: "At the mountains of madness", "The shunned house", "The dreams in the witch-house" and "The statement of Randolph Carter".

I have to say that none was as good as I expected...

Regards :).

Heh, some toy company made some plush animal dolls of Cthulu & Nyarlathotep... There's a "Summer Fun Cthulu" and he has a Tropical shirt and sandals and a hat... Tentacles everywhere. Kinda funny...

None of those far are particularly good. You hit the bottom of the barrel with those.
Don't let it bias you against future opportunities, particularly if you get to read for example Beyond the Wall of Sleep, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, From Beyond, or anything wedged around those in a compilation.

That's awesome. I'd love to see a photo of such.

Anyone notice Cthulhoid elements in Dark City or the Matrix? It gets more intense in Matrix Reloaded, with octopus headed dudes showing up in the trailer.

While I haven't read any of the books, I used to play the Chaosium Call of Cthulhu RPG, that was GMed by an avid fan.

I've read anything I could get from him long ago. "At the mountains of madness" was certainly the highlight, simply scary. Later on I got addicted to Lem.

Yeah I like to endulge now and again. I first got hooked by reading "the thing in the moonlight"- short but sweet.

I guess you know about the new game coming out- "Call of Cuthulu: Dark corners of the Earth"?

Same, indeed that was only 2 weeks ago where my character Dr Hartmann (Doctor Sane) survived a summoning of "The Great Unclean One" or something (I just play, don't bother learning all the mosters or even most of the rules :D ) at the city dump.

I am pleased to report none of the other player characters survived

P.S They are making a PC Game for "Call of Cthulu" apparently!

I needed a dictionary the first few runs but I love Lovecraft. Modern macabre writers like King or Barker do not hold a candle to the subtle brilliance of Lovecraft, Hawthorne or Poe. I love almost all of Lovecraft's stories, but The Doom That Came to Sarnath, The Tomb, The Dunwich Horror, and The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath really stand out for me.

King and Barker rely on gore; Lovecraft relied on your fear of the unknown.

I can't take the Cthulhu seriously anymore thanks to Fark.com and somethingawful.com

The one I read and really enjoyed was called the shadow over innismouth or something like that.

Cool links Civ Cube.

Thanks for the computer game info. I bought the first edition Call of Cthulhu game but lost interest in it fairly quick. I do have a friend who is obsessed and made us play a couple times. I would always get killed quickly.

I love this author's works, but for some reason can't remember the actual works themselves... Read them quite a while ago. All I remember is it was really frightening.

"Ancient before the Fifth Cataclysm, here between the two rivers in Ur the Dreamer waits!
And when the seal of the seventh city is broken, then shall the dreamer in the catacombs of Ur awaken!
Forsaken (when His darksome splendorous glory eclipses it) burns the sun, Enthrone (the eternally) benighted one, Usurper of the skies.
Named in (that black, shunned tome of ) forbidden lore, Destined to rule (this telluric sphere and the myriad stars beyond) once more, The Dreamer shall arise!
Now, let the Gate yawn wide and the horrors of the Abyss engulf the earth, for the Dreamer in the catacombs is risen!"

Yep.
I like Lovecraft's mythos.

I'm a big Lovecraft fan. He is my favorite horror writer ever (tied, along with Poe). I have "Dreams of Terror and Death," as well as "The Best of HP Lovecraft" and "The Transition of HP Lovecraft." So many excellent stories, I can't pick a favorite.
