Hammers replacing shields?

Shields, Hammers, whatever! It is all referring to "Production" but what is a "unit of production" and WHAT IS ITS SYMBOL?

When building a "building" it could be a log, a wooden plank, a slab of stone or a brick. When building a unit it could be a person, weapon or vehicle (horse, tank, etc.).

When production is not assigned it could be a ... ??? Might as well use a hammer for everything I suppose, they are used at some stage for most production purposes in what CIV cities build.

Yeah, these are the kind of arguments we are stuck on slower news days.

Personally I'm so sick of the two sides acting like little kids that I will mod in little footballs(the good old fashioned American kind) to replace the civ 4 standard hammer graphic or the shield redesign someone is sure to make. Hah, shows you guys. I'm so hip and counter-culture.
