I thought happiness of a city is -3, and 1 pop = -1. However, I started a new game and notice after settling my capital my unhappiness is -1.8. That is not -3, in fact that is 60% of -3. Is this a difficulty thing or what??
Check your difficulty. Chieftain, for instance, has an unhappiness modifier of 0.6, so at that level you'll have 1.8 per city and 0.6 per population. Since Chieftain is the default handicap, it's very easy to forget to change it. Or yes, if you're playing on Huge there's another x0.6. (Large is x0.8, all the others are x1.0.)
Thanks guys, I didn't know about the huge map happiness multiplier. I can't play a Huge map (computer specs) and couldn't realy see the point with what I perceived as being major happiness issues.
On the basis of this information I will be purchasing a new pc this weekend, I can't wait, I feel like a kid in a candy store!
