I may not be seeing the forest for the trees but could someone explain the "Happy" box in the city menu?

The top row shows the population in the city how it would look like if you didn't have any happywonders, happyimprovements, luxuries or martial units.
The second row shows how the people reacts with luxuries, third improvements, fourth martial units and last wonders(like Hanging Gardens).
Hope it explains it enough, and that I understand your question right.
