If you build a marketplace in a city that has more than one luxury, you will get extra happy faces(s). My question is how many extra happy faces do you get? Does it depend on how many different luxuries you have or how many of the same luxuries you have?

play the game, and this will be visible in the city screen, right from the list of improvements, and left from the bar with corrupted commerce.

It goes like this:
lux1 :)
lux2 :)
lux3 :) :)
lux4 :) :)
lux5 :) :) :)
lux6 3 (can't put more smilies in post)
lux7 4
lux8 4

With all 8 lux, this amounts to 20 happy faces, or 12 more than without a marked.

Additional lux of the same type only have value in trade with other civ.

The bonuses are based off of how many DIFFERENT luxes you have. With a marketplace,

1-2 lux = 1 :) each
3-4 lux = 2 :) each
5-6 lux = 3 :) each
7+. lux = 4 :) each

Edit: Dang, MAS beat me to it...

Don't you mean 12 more? Still, even pure warmongers build marketplaces, so they must be good.

Also, if you are in a Golden Age, how many extra happy faces do you get?

That depends on how high you set the lux slider. Let's say your capital's size 9 and ordinarily brings in 30 gpt. With lux at 10%, you'll get 3 happy faces. During your GA, you'd get 40 gpt (assuming every tile gives at least 1 commerce), giving you 4 happy faces at 10% lux.

i usually put my lux at 30% and build marketplaces, that seems to keep the population happy for a little while

Marketplaces has no effects on happy faces without luxury resources.

Not to jack, but I've been wondering about the net effects of lux and marketplaces without other happiness boosting factors such as mp and temples etc. Say on Emp and above, with a market and 8lux, how much effect would it actually have?

how much effect ?
If you have a market and 8 luxes, you never need to worry about happiness again. Even if you suffer some war weariness.

I don't start building markets before i get like 5 luxes or so though.

Markets have no effect on the commerce going to lux via the lux slider in the F1 screen. The editor allows you to add this effect to a structure, but there is nothing in the normal epic game that increases lux-commerce.

Markets only effect the happiness from lux resources.

lux resources and lux commerce create happiness.
Buildings, wonders, military police in some governments, and difficulty bonus give contentness.

If I understand it correctly then:

A happiness effect will always first turn one content face happy. If a city doesn't have any more content faces, it will turn an unhappy face content.
A contentness effect will always turn one unhappy face content. It will never create a happy face.

At the highest difficulty levels:
the first happiness will turn the free content face happy.
the second will turn the 2th citizen content
the 3th will turn the 2th citizen happy
the 4th will turn the 3th citizen content
the 5th will turn the 3th citizen happy
the 6th will turn the 4th citizen content
the 8th will turn the 4th citizen happy

At regent/monarch diff:
the first happiness will turn the 1th free content face happy.
the second will turn the 2th free content face happy.
the 3th will turn the 3th citizen content
the 4th will turn the 3th citizen happy
the 5th will turn the 4th citizen content
the 6th will turn the 4th citizen happy
the 8th will turn the 5th citizen content

At warlord diff:
the first happiness will turn the 1th free content face happy.
the second will turn the 2th free content face happy.
the 3th will turn the 3th free content face happy.
the 4th will turn the 4th citizen content
the 5th will turn the 4th citizen happy
the 6th will turn the 5th citizen content
the 8th will turn the 5th citizen happy

Right, except that you only get once content citizen on emperor, two on regent and monarch.

Is it anyway you can allocate were the gpt for luxuries go? Sometimes I have those cities with X numbers of happy faces, and X number with content faces, and other cities with a lot of unhappy faces.

The problem is, when I use the slider, the cities with the happy/content faces, beggin to get all happy, but the city with unhapiness don't get much difference in it. Would be good if I could decide in which city I would spend money for happiness, but I don't know if it is possible.

You can be more efficient sometimes if you use some specialist in your semi-core area. Or in cities that just give very low commerce.

If you don't have anything else to build anymore (say, you control your continent and don't yet have a way to reach the other, etc.) you could opt to build a temple in the cities with less commerce, or maybe even a cathedral.

I think that is because you didn't build happiness improvements in the unhappy cites.

Thanks MAS, that's exactly what I was asking for :)

So in a city with 12 pop without any temples and such, market+8 lux would make four citizens happy, and four content right?

No because a market +8 lux would give 20 happiness, remember... :)

Right, 4 smiles and 4 content would be 8 lux without the market :hammer2:

With markets, that makes all 12 happy.

Only at chieftain. You'd have one content at warlord, one unhappy at regent or monarch, and one content and one unhappy at emperor and above.
