Have given up on Civ 4

Agreed, and that's why I mentioned it originally (post #8).

For example, I have 1GB but at as I'm typing I have only 600MB free with only the internet browser, media player and normal background processes running.

EDIT I've reported in the past seeing Civ use 700MB. I think that was a large map. That is definitely not possible with only 512MB of RAM.:)

It is possible. CivIV will use virtual memory but that will slow the game down tremandously ;)

lol good point. Usually I do account for that.

Lets remember that if you're playing BtS on 512mb and running XP, you don't really have 512mb. XP minimum is 256mb and it barely runs on that. i used to have a 1.6 celeron with 256mb and it could barely run the most basic of games.

I'd back that up, too. Used to use a 2.5 gig Athlon with 512mb. And I had
problems. Huge maps on Civ 3, impossible. Turns up to 5 min. each.
Now I've got a 5.5 gig Athlon with 1012mb. Problem solved. Even huge maps
on BTS run well. In this case, size really does matter.
One thing to watch out for, with new comps though. When I got my new
one, I discovered 11 preloaded programs running on Startup. Once i cleared
all that rubbish, it ran like a dream. Beware of preloaded software!!!

My PC* ran like an epileptic donkey with three legs when I first bought it, despite diligent patch downloading, to the extent that like the OP I just gave up. Main sympton being frequent crashing.
However, when my entirely adequate ATI (Radeon 9800pro 128mb) card died and I put an Nvidia (7800GS) card in instead it ran fine. I've been playing a lot recently and can't recall it crashing once.

IIRC most of the moans on first release were from non-Nvidia card PC owners.

When I first installed the base Civ 4 programme, it appeared to be a major enhancement in regards to gameplay, but it continually crashed. After a brief upgrade on a range of aspects of my laptop (Dell 9300 with XP SP2), I gave up and parked it for a time.
Strange. I have run Civ4 on a 9300 without problems.
