It is hard to say as we have no game settings. Giving it appears to be rather late in the game and Rome has a restricted land area, it is common.

They have built a lot of units and have no place to use them.

Good luck. Infantry in Metropolises should be able to kill most of that stack but you may have to give up some cities,

It's time to go elite and great leader farming. ;) If you have any artillery, use that first to weaken the Mech Infantry. I see you get Motorized Transportation in one turn - build (or rush) some tanks, and use those to attack (preferably veterans from cities with barracks). Using planes will also help (lethal bombard!!).

By the way, what level was this on?

You will need artillery! No need to worry about the legionaries, guerillas and MIs in that stack. They are useless against your fortified infantry. You really need to weaken the Mech Inf (as Ginger Ale said), they will protect the rest of the stack. I guess they brought some pillagers too (riflemen etc.). Are you able to buy motorized transp. from someone? Should be cheap as you just have one turn left. Then you can hurry tanks on the same turn. I always keep 40-50 (even more) artillery for this kind of invasion.

And yes - it happens. I remember the gracious Greeks doing something like that to me...

Yep, you're screwed. Just kidding. I agree with thetrooper that artillery is the answer. I would try to set the battlefield first, and force them to attack you. Force the AI to go over barren terrain (use your artillery to wipe out the roads and railroads) and then to attack your units fortified in barricades. Meanwhile, you're bombarding them the whole time. The AI is sometimes dumb enough to retreat with all their 1-2 HP units, while advancing with their 3-4 HP units. If you have any way to do it, ravaging the convoy of 1-2 HP units is a great way to level the playing field.

I would make barricades 2-3 tiles deep, connected by railroads. If the AI penetrates a tile, make a few more tiles of barricades in that area. That's why you have worker gangs.

Next tactic is to strengthen the cities the AI is threatening, while weakening other front-line cities. The AI is sometimes dumb enough to abandon the original line of attack and send the Stack Of Doom over to the newly-weakened city. Since I have railroads, I then strengthen that city, while weakening the original target. Some consider this an exploit called "puppet strings". I do not, because it's what I would do in real life.

Hope these ideas help. No matter what- don't give up hope.

Forgot to add- the worst Stack Of Doom I've beaten was 28 infantry and 6 guerillas, plus occasional reinforcements. Artillery worked wonders, and my cavalry picked off the 1-2 HP survivors.

Yes - cavalry or anything that retreats from battle, able to hide and replenish health in barracks.

Looks like you're screwed. I have never seen a stack bigger than about 10 made by an AI. don't they usually divide and conquer?

I have seen many stacks of over 100. When I land my invasion force and either make a new city or capture one, the AI will send 3-6 stacks many of over 100 to attack (Sid).

guys thank you for your replies. unfortunately i didnt see them before attempting this. i barely build any artillery at all anyway so i was pretty much screwed.

I put up a valiant effort ( i think), but they seemed to cut through my defences easily. 5 turns after this I had lost 6 cities to them, managing to only kill about 10 of their units with my defence. I used up all my cavaliers and most of my infantry to attack, but i was left with only 3 cities at the end of this war.

SO. rather than start a new game, i reloaded this one a few turns before this & grovelled to get peace. they didnt attack me so i got to progress a bit & plant spies. after about 10 more years of peace i grovelled some more & with the spies i found that the greeks have a petiful army so i began to attack them, taking nearly all their cities, before being attacked by the romans. now they have modern armour & a helluva lot of them & i dont have oil to upgrade stuff !

Im gonna play that game soon as i get home & i'll post some screenies if you are intrested.

thanks for the help guys, i never thought to come to cfanatics & discuss the particulars of a certain game. maybe i'll finally learn stuff this way !

btw there are about2 more stacks under the menu, one of them is about the size of this one & the other a little shorter than a screen long. this is on warlord. I would like to play harder games, but i never make it to the modern era ( the era i love to play on).

Attacking max hitpoint mech inf with cavalry is suicidal. Your infantry is mainly defense. You must be desperate to attack with infantry (the 6 attack value have to be humbug!). Only 3 cities left - that was a good beating! ;)

I guess the reload was worth it as you must have spent a long time on this game...
