So i really want to get back in and have a good game. My last game was a long time ago and i played as Germany in a Huge real earth map and won via science.

With G&K $12 i figured i'd buy it and at least get a few games in. I downloaded a few of the 'must have' mods but I'm wondering if people even recommend using mods or should i just go vanilla?

Gods and Kings is a big improvement over vanilla. I'd suggest you play a couple games on smaller maps to get a feeling for the new combat system, CS-quests and religion. And maybe you should try the scenarios, they are great.

And mods, you can find great things but i wouldn't start getting into that now with the new addon in about a month.

I think the OP is asking whether he should stay with 'vanilla' G&K for now since he just got it, or try G&K plus mods immediately.

To the OP: "vanilla" is usually a term reserved for pre-expac Civ 5.

Was in similar scenario as you, had played tons of civ 5 but put aside before G&K came out. Picked up G&K couple months ago and been playing a ton since then.

I'd recommend trying out G&K as-is, without additional mods until you get a feel for what you may feel is still lacking (or not). I find G&K a huge improvement in so many ways over vanilla Civ 5.

Even without the new religion and espionage stuff, it just seems like the game is so much more intersting with the new units, naval changes and AI tweaks.

I'd play G&K plain for awhile and then go hunt / use additional mods if you like. Personally I haven't felt the need to install a single mod yet and I've out well over 200 hours just with G&K

Play the regular version first then after you're comfortable with G&K, play it with mods.

I had seen that article and collected most of those mods Thanks :). I still figured it'd be worth asking people on here.So now I've just started a small game and going to see how it goes.

Stick with the base version for now, in my opinion.

My experience with mods has been very hit and miss. Even long standing, relatively straight forward mods like Info Addict or Vanilla Enhanced have irritating issues and bugs. They may distort the experience for you.

Edit: I also am not entirely convinced that the balancing decisions made in the community mods make the game better, but that's subjective, of course. The point remains that you should get to know the base game before trying mods and deciding which version you like best.

There was a lot of improvements from vanilla to g&k, I'd say play it "normal" to get used to it (without mods). Have fun!
