Help a noob out please!

Hey everyone this is my first post on here so I apologize for my dumb questions. When I try and play civ IV it stops on the XML screen and says civ IV has stopped working and it says windows is looking for a solution but doesn't find any and then it has to close. Any help would be greatly appreciated! try and keep it simple i really want to play!!

Try reinstalling?

If worse comes to worse, try to get another copy. My original civ4 was faulty.

So i dont need to do any updates or patches or anything??

So i downloaded 1.74 and now it gets to init engine and then it says error loading shader libraries any suggestions??

Is this the plain disc version of civ 4 (ie: not downloaded and without Warlords or Beyond the Sword)?

What Operating System are you using? If Vista or Win 7 did you right click on the patch and choose run as administrator or did you just double-click on the patch to run it?

Have you installed the latest version of directx 9c?

If you post you dxdiag report as a txt file that may help someone suggest some solutions.

Yes it is the plain disc and I tried running as administrator on win7 and what do you mean by the dxdiag report??

I still have vista, so I don't know much on win7, but I believe there is a few problems addressed in other threads. Maybe it might be worth your time to check around?

the error loading shader libraries should be reolved by installing this:
