Help! How to Sign MPP?

Okay, I just registered on this forum for the express reason of finding out how to sign a Mutual Protection Pact. I've been playing the game 2 days straight (yea it is great) and I believe I have the two prerequisites for an MPP: writing, and an embassy in the other capitals. But when I click on either diplomacy or thru the foreign advisor and enter into trade talks, THERE IS ONLY Right of Passage under Diplomatic Treaties. There isn't even trade embargo.

Please somebody coach me like I'm a learning disabled three year old and how do you sign these diplomatic treaties?? What are the conditions to get it to appear as an option?? At this point no civ has ever offered it to me, and I've never been able to offer it as an option in trades. Please have mercy....

ps- I am playing on a Mac, but the software is all up to date (1.29 I think)

You need Nationalism.

You can only sign an MPP after nationalism. You unlock only the RoP with writing.
