How is the other continent doing in tech? What difficulty level is this? You may face the possiblility of falling behind in the tech race.

Turn the fact you are an island into your advantage - it is easy to defend an island. Set all your cities to build Swords and galleys. Unless you are way behind in tech then declare war and capture a few cities from the AI (once you have a decent force). Don't build the FP on your island, build it in one of the cities you capture with a great leader. If you are massively behind in tech than trade and research your way back up until you can produce units that have a chance of capturing his cities.

...except of course that the galleys will all sink.

this is a pretty grim starting position.

i guess id probably irrigate everything and produce workers to join into the cities without the food surpluses in order to grow the empire. i agree about producing the fp on the main continent. i suspect this game will have a lot of gold-rushed building for quite some time. when they all get up to size 12 you can then mine everything again.

get the continentals into wars through alliances until you have an opportunity to land in force later on. it will at least slow them down while you are doing your slooow peaceful building.

though this game is winnable i have to admit its one of the more difficult games ive seen recently.

Brilliant. They can't reach you so get them fighting - be careful not to accidentally create a world power over there - make sure the war is evenly matched so that they all stay the same size.

Try to get the AIs to fight each other, to weaken each other. Get a strong navy. Build a large assault force complete with trebuches, pikes, swords, knights, etc. about 20 of each. Capture a costal city, preferably that mayan city nearest you, and hold it. To capture it properly, land in a place were there is only one way there. Then ship reinforcements as fast as possible, but do not take any cities, because that will only spread you out thinly. Later, sue for peace once the fighting goes down. Then, ship a few workers there and rebuild the improvements. Later, once you have gotten a far stronger force, redeclare war, and slowly make your way inland.

bad news guys I dont' have any iron. I am behind in the tech race. I also plan to build a milatary. plus I can't trade anything untill I can travel the ocean.

build a library in ever city and just research and research until you can trade accross oceans. To be honest it looks like going for a domination win might be too tough

give up. your land sucks - it's all arctic and desert.
Never ever give up. Britain is on an island too, and look what it has accomplished. Plus, when you win, victory will be all that much sweeter.

I would suggest you play it through to the end.

Can I ask what difficulty this is? Which Civ build? map size?

My very first C3C game was nearly an identical start to yours. Also Japan, I played a pangea map and somehow got stuck in a large continent sized island. Didn't have iron either

The egyptians were also in an island-continent of their own, and through wars, I managed to steal their oil and rubber supplies.

I would make a few notes for you once you can start trading:

1) From the look of your island, you're likely to have a source of oil so you're relatively safe there. But you need to secure Iron ASAP and start looking for terrain that might support rubber (jungles). Island starts are always dangeous when it comes to resource access, since you're options will be extremely limited.

2) I suggest you import iron from someone, build up an army and secure a source of iron for yourself on the main continent

3) secondary target, in addition to iron, would be to find a Civ where they have some surplus luxuries (ie: 2 or more of furs) This will be good for you down the road. If you can't manage to secure any number of strategic resources, like saltpeter, coal, or rubber, having luxuries other civs need can lower your cost and allow you to trade for these resources to buy you time before you can find a way to secure them for yourselves.

I agree with the assesment that this looks pretty grim, but I think it will be a good learning experience to play it through. There's a lot of fun being a weak civ in this game. You get bullied around but it builds character.

p.s. post a save ?
:king:

I'd appreciate a save too... Looks like fun!

I'd prolly try to take over the northmost city of those carrot-coloured people as my first step if it is in a good location (production-wise) and start moving south from there. Focussing your strength on the weakest enemy first should boost up your economy and production while you are still not too threatening to larger civs.

What do you want a earlier save or my current save. I am on regent also random everything else. that way I get a fair challenge. thanks for the advice I am not going to quit i hope to win at retirement if nothing else.

Yes the land might stink but almost every city has a fish or whale in it so habors helped out a lot and they are all growing. I also kept the cities close since I did have desert and tundra but lots of water.

Disbanding unnecessary units in this case could be a good strategy considering you won't be getting into a conflict in a long time, this will help maximize GPT and let you buy more techs... good luck :)

This might look hard, but it's possible to win. Good Luck and hope you win. :)

btw, is it just me or does your island look like the state of New Jersey. :crazyeye: (at least i should know)
