Also do a google search on +STEVE +DIGITAL + CAMERA to find the website that's called something like 'steve's digitial camera forum'. it's free and has lots of advice and lots of info about 'fundamentals'.
In the price range you're looking at, you're probably talking about a 3 megapixel camera, which will do just fine for printing photos up to 5x7. You need more megapixels to print larger pictures. If you're not planning on printing the pictures but just sharing them on the web or via email, 3.2 is sufficient, and any 'bigger' would cause your 'image' files to be larger than they need to be for downloading/uploading.
One of the other few things I know about digital cameras is that there are two types of ZOOM - optical and digital. OPTICAL zoom is 'better' in that it doesn't degrade the resolution of the captured image...the DIGITAL zoom may wind up giving you 'grainy' looking pictures.
