I just started playing Civ 3 a day ago and i am having a problem. I have bombers and jet planes and when i bomb the archers they get 1 HP (red hp bar) and they never die! I cannot attack them or anything. Why is this? What is the point of making planes when they come and take my city with archers? I mean i have artilary, troops, planes and 4 horse man takes the city that has walls and so on.. Plz help me with this i am so annoyed.. It seams science is not important at all in Civ 3. Civ 2 was great i reckon...

Thank you..

Aircraft are considered to be a bombardment attack. Under the basic rules, bombardment does not kill units, the most it can do is "soften them up" by reducing them to one hitpoint. While some find this frustrating in-game, it actually is rather realistic.

During World War 2, millions of tons of bombs were dropped on cities and battlefields. During the Gulf War, B-52's carpetbombed vast tracts of Iraqi-occupied territory. In both instances, all that was accomplished was "softening up" the defenders (as well as a LOT of collateral damage, of course). It still required sending in ground troops to defeat the remainder of defending forces (the 1 hit worth of the unit, in game terms) and capture any cities/territory.

Air power is a tremendous "force multiplier" but it doesn't eliminate the need for ground units, it just helps you gain better results with fewer of them.

I agree about land unit bombarding but I think we should be able to destroy sea units by bombarding.
When bombarding archer unit, you will kill some (one hit point) but a lot of archers will run for cover and survive. You can't kill a entirely unit with bombs.
A boat is slow and it's easy to sink with couple of missiles or bombs.
A change should be made otherwise it'll be impossible to create a good Pearl Harbour Scenario.
