I need some tips on how to get armies easier. I get armies, but I dont get enough to build the pentagon. Usually i sent my elite units out againt what i THINk is a weak opponent, only to have the elite roundly whipped by an inferior regular unit. this make for very few armies. I've even had a tank army been defeated by a lone infantry (elite albiet...) Is there any easy way to get alot fo armies, because I could always use more....

You gotta protect those elites, and maximize your chances for an elite win. The way to do that is with bombers or artillery. Redline the defenders with your bombers or arty, and then use the elites to get the great leader.

Also keep in mind that you just need one win with an army in order to create the Military Academy, which can be built after Military Tradition is discovered. So don't try and get GLs to make your armies (unless it's Conquests and you don't have much choice), but build the extra armies and then you can build the pentagon.

Yeah, i figered arty's were awesome based on zerksees's thread, but i just hate artillery becase it take so damn long to get a stack of arty to finish bombarding.

This brings up pretty much the only bad trait of Civ3, the watching of animations of countless battles, which happen pretty much every turn.

Thanks for the advice though, I guess i'll use artillery even though i hate watching them work...

You do know that you can build armies with the military academy, without having to use great leaders, do you?

Well you could always play as the Russians and use the UU like crazy. With the blitz trait you get elites at the drop of a hat. You can then find opportunities to have up to 3 kills in one turn. That is a great way to get a leader.

When you get one rush it to a city and create an army. Do not use the leader for anything else, until you have three armies. With the MA under construction, you can build your own armies, but that whole method takes lots of time.

With the military academy, you could easily pay cash to rush the army. If you you do it right, you could pay as little as 500 gold to rush a new army in every turn.

I suck at military

If I do start a war against the AI, sometimes I will win and wipe out the civilization, but at some point in the game I usually get owned by one of the AI Civs, forcing me to sue for peace, sometimes at high costs.

This is an area of Civ that I definitely need to improve in. Right now I generally try to avoid war.

TyranusBonehead this is a builders fate. Not making enough troops and waiting too long to use those that they have.

Consider making a lot less culture structures below Demi and going right into attackers. Do not wait until you have huge stack of attackers to go after someone. Often 6-8 horses will get you a lot of progress, especially if you are making more in most of your cities to funnel into the breach.

Does anyone else think that the heroic epic (I think that's what it's called) doesn't actually improve things as much as you're led to believe it will? The GL's are still very few and far between until MA appears on the scene

They are still RNG dependant. In theory the HE should help, in practice it is very iffy. I would not build it from scratch in a pangea game, nor use a leader unless it was a case where I already had my limit of armies and more battles were coming.

I'll give it a try, thanks!

Build a military academy in your most productive city and build yourself an army every 4-5 turns... Or use Cossacks with artilery to get a lot of elites...
