Before finding this website i just played Civ3 like a clueless newbie and got no where. Usually i would get to the Middle Ages and give up (made it to industrial once) due to poor city placement, terrain improvments, research, money managment.... basically everything a typical newbie does :p

After finding this website and reading the War Accademy and posts on this forum my gameplay has improved dramatically. In my first game since reading i was first to reach Middle Ages (by a long way), have high culture cities, completed 4 wonders (all made in 1 set 'wonder city') and also have just under 2000 gold. :king:

However, despite this vast improvement i have still yet to learn how the different governments work. Ive read a few bits and pieces on the different types of government but have yet to see a full War Accademy article or post on all their good/bad points. Currently my main choice of government is Monarchy and have no idea if this is good or bad due to lack of knowledge about the other forms of controll. I did read a post somewhere that Republic is good and makes you lots of money, however when i changed to it i was losing 57 gold per turn so had to quickly go back to Monarchy.

Now for those of you that have skipped my endless babbling i will get to the point: Can anyone give me a link to a post or article that gives a nice, in-depth explanation of the different forms of government? (preferably newbie friendly :p )

if its not a gotm may be good just to reload a couple of tiems and try different governments.
basically..
republic: more gpt but low unit upkeep (if youve got a big lilitary youll loose gpt)
monarchy: less gpt but easier to keep people happy and better for big army
democracy: lots of gpt... like republic but more so really
communism: good for big empires with large army
fascism: kills your cities but good for mass workers or very big armies
despo: bollocks
anarchy even bollockser (haha)
feadalism: good if youve got lots of small cities apparentkly (never used it)

Personaly i change 3-4 goverments.
4000 B.C-500 A.D : Despotism
500 A.D-1300,1500 A.D : Republic
1300,1500 A.D : Democracy
The time depends on the circumstasnces, but more or less it goes like that. The fourth goverment i use occasionaly is Monarch after Despotism if my economy is not good enought.

Despotism: The base government, with the 2 shield,food,commerce/tile limit. Leave it as soon as possible!

The two ancient gov

Republic: For peaceful builders, but some pro likes it in war even with problematic war wearineess and military upkeep. Well, you won't have problems with money, you get plus one in every tile that already produces one and you have cash rush!

Monarchy: The most flexible governmenet (imho): For warmongers? Well, yes it could work very well in war with its friendly military upkeep, but good in peacetime, too. Cash rush is great, no ww, and not much corruption!

Feudalism: IS it useful? Dunno... there are lots of threads thinking about this gov... I agree with T3h_m013, never used, but others say that its good for smaller civs, with its military upkeep. But who wants to own a small
civ? :D

Advanced governements

Democracy: High ww, huge military upkeep problems, this is the most peaceful gov? Yes, but no... It can be used in wars very well, buy that time you're ready to wage quick wars... Economics? No problem! Corruption and waste? What's that? Worker speed? Rapid, quick and fast! :D

Communism: The governement for wars... total dictature with poprush and problematic corruption! BUT! Military police is great, Draft Rate is great, many, many soldiers supplied form the civ, if you want total war, choose Communism!

Fascism: the other government for wars... :D Impressive worker rate, poprush, great draft rate but the same problems with communism.

My change:

Despotis----->Monarchy------>Commnism (warmonger) :ar15:

It depends on if you are a builder or warmonger. I myself since I am more of a war monger and like to win by dominatoin I will go this route Despot - Republic (to communism (large empire) or Fascism (smaller empire) if WW is too much)
If I was a builder I would shoot for democracy

Im a builder but i dont like leaving myself open to attack as im not very diplomatic and usually end up with an unwanted war. Having no MP in my cities would mean they can just walk right in and take them over which is something im not particularly fond of.

I would be a 'warmonger' if i was any good at it but somehow the computer just manages to swamp me with either hundreds of troops, or they have hundreds of troops fortified in their towns and i can never take them over :( .

on what difficulty do u play??

Threw myself in at the deep end and chose Regent without actually having played any of the easier levels first :crazyeye:

Should also add im playing Civ3 Conquests

I always choose Republic. By the time I reasearch Facism or Communism it's just such a pain to change governments. Democracy's huge army costs and war weariness make me never even reseach it.

That's not exactly accurate. Under Despotism, you receive a -1 penalty to food/commerce/production on any square that produces more than two. So three becomes two, four becomes three, five becomes four....

I would suggest democracy,if you want to have a rich, moderately defended country.
Monarchy is good to control and organize your country (for assault or democracy).
Don't take communism as an advanced version of monarchy, because you can hurry only by killing citizens, thing that reminds me of despotism, and therefore never used communism.I'm rather peace-loving,in general lines (A very good reason for that is that I hate having united my country with the enemy's,be paralyzed and having to build up again what you destroyed).

You're right, Turner!
I apologize! :D

Hi folks !

In my eyes, demo is good for small to middle-sized empires(20-40 cities),but when your empire begins exceeding 50 cities ( and i normally build empires >100 cities) komm is very powerful due to its special korruption-calculation. You just outproduce the AI. Especially with factories in combinaton with Hoover-Dam, your cities will have a acceptable production, even the far far away ones. And with the SPHQ , the FP and your Palace , the corruption can be countered much more flexible. For example with Dem it is a serious problem to establish a second empire on another continent due to its corr.-calc. , but with Komm you are able to build the FP or SPHQ there and then the corruption should lower to the same levels as in your homeland.
The only thing i must say is better in Dem is the cash rush. But with that Komm would be way to powerful. :mischief:

have fun !
