Help with Patch 1.74

I recently installed Civ IV (no expansion) on my laptop (my disc 2 was scratched to hell so I had to borrow a friend's disc).

I tried to update to patch 1.74 both through Civ's menu and by manually downloading and installing the patch. Neither worked. The first gave me a message of 0/-1 bytes for a few seconds then said "failed to download". The second one told me that my version of Civ was incompatible, and I should re-install. I didn't update it when I first installed it, but it says I'm running version 1.09. My OS is Vista Home Premium.

Please help!

install the 1.61 patch first, then the 1.74 patch.

OK, I installed the patches, but now whenever I try to start the game, it says "error loading shader libraries."

Fix? (It started just fine before the patches)
