i just got Civ 4, like an hour ago, i installed it, everything looks fine, launched the game, looks nice, and then i started a game, the first problem i noticed was that i could see the faces of the leaders, only their eyes and mouth (was funny tho)..
anyway, i said to myself, who cares about the faces if it's the only problem.
and after i started a game the whole terrain is black, except the starting units..
so i updated the game, and i could see the faces but the terrain problem stayed the same.
if anyone got an idea how to solve this problem, please help me.

your graphics driver is dated 2002.

your audio driver is dated 2003

your page file is too small.

you are at min spec on card and below ram spec by 2 at 510(prob your bios has it reserved for something who knows what.

your OS is sp1 when it should be sp2.

You have a bit of work to do. No guarantees either.)

Questions:

Do you have 1.09 patch installed?

What are you willing to do to get it to run?

PS. It wont be easy to get it to run right.

You should update it. See the website of the manufacturer.

Look around on google for page file for info on how to increase the size of your pagefile. (Assuming you have enough disk space already) The pagefile can be rather complicated, I would save this for a last resort.

If you do manage to get it to run on the card, it probably won't look or run at 100%. Adding another 512MB stick of RAM would help performance. See Newegg.com for RAM. It isn't all that expensive anymore. There are also sub-$100 video cards that would improve performance.

Get the SP2 update from microsoft.com or run Windows Update (at the top of the All Programs list, at least on my system).

As Neon said, no guarantees. Computers can be so finicky. Might be easier to get a whole new setup:P

I guess I would start by uninstalling CIV IV and all its components. Including the one buried in current user profile: C:\Documents and Settings\Currentuser\Application Data\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4. Where Currentuser = The name of user logged on when windows was first installed.

Then I would download WIN XP SP2 upgrade from Microsoft website.

After that is loaded I would run another DxDiag and under the direct x tab verify that no problems were found. If there is anything else in there other than no problems found please post it.

Now that XP is updated I would work on the graphics driver.

Set your page file to fixed 1500/1500 min max.
Go to start right click the my computer icon then properties/advanced and click the settings button under performance/advanced tab and under virtual memory hit the change button. Use custom size 1500 for both initial and max then set and restart.

Defrag your computer.

From the ATI site download driver cleaner (don’t run it just yet)

Then I would go to the Omega driver web site and download omega ati radeon drivers 2675a. (don’t run it yet)

Now nuke your old drivers with ATI driver cleaner and restart. Your computer should start up and load basic vga driver. Let it finish that and restart if called for.

Now load the omega drivers and restart when asked.

Now your system is up and running change your display and graphics settings by right clicking on the desktop the properties/settings/. Set your display to 1024 x 768 and 16 bit color apply and Reboot. Go back to settings again and press advanced key. Go to smartgart tab and verify that fast write is off. Go to VPU recover and verify that it is enabled. Go to the 3d tab and for both 3d and openGL set the bar to optimal performance. This should turn off vsync which can cause crashes when scrolling the map in CIV IV. Hit apply and restart your computer.

Install the game then the patch (but not from inside the game).

Start the game and go to options first. Under graphics setting use low and 1024 X 768. use as little as possible graphics wise at first. Like check the box marked single unit graphics.

Run the game (stay to the smaller sized map at first and hold your breath.).

Leave the audio driver alone for now.

There are more things you can add for better performance like harks mem patch. This is just to see if you can get going with the min specs first.
